Franz, attorney for MCIA, announced this week that he is filing written objections of over 8,000 McHenry County residents who oppose the location of the proposed landfill. Members of MCIA have been circulating the petition throughout the county. "We wanted to put an end to the speculation that only a small group of people near Union oppose this landfill. There is massive opposition to this intrusion into our county, and the opposition comes from every area of the county. The people of this county are sending a message to Waste Management and the county board," Franz said. "The objections are based on the fact that the proposed site is entirely unsuitable. The site is located near numerous residences; it is surrounded on three sides by the Kishwaukee River and in an area where the water table is a few feet below ground level," he continued. ^ 4-H week declared FURNITURE GALLERIES • CRYSTAL LAKE PENNSYLVANIA HOUSE rAL GET A FREE VACATION ANDS/WEM* WHEN YOU BUY ANY PENNSYLVANIA HOUSE DINING ROOM "Oct. 2-8 is National 4-H Week, an excellent time for new 4-H groups to organize," states Kathi Weilbacher, McHenry County 4- H and youth adviser. The 4-H program year begins annually on Sept. 1 and ends Aujg. 31. As the new 4-H year begins, many young people are enrolling or re- enrolling in 42 presently . established 4-H clubs in McHenry County. "Now is the best time to become involved", says Ms. Weilbacher, "by joining an existing club or starting one in your community or neighborhod,". £f no 4-H club is located . in a community, the McHenry County University of Illinois Extension office can help start a new 4-H club. Ms. Weilbacher suggests. "To start a 4-H club you need 1 volunteer leader and 5 youth. The club needs to meet 6 times before Aug. 31." "Starting a club is as easy as 1 -2 - 3" she states. "1 - contact me for information on the 4-H club program and help in developing a plan. 2 - recruit prospective members and families, and 3 - c o n d u c t a n informational meeting and make plans to follow up with the first club meeting." As the groups meet and become organized, each member and leader receives literature to assist them in learning about their chosen areas and together they learn by doing. New 4-H clubs are always needed to allow more youth the opportunity to experience 4-H. The idea of 4-H and 4-H clubs goes back to the early 1920's. The same goal of helping young people to "learn by doing" is just as current today as then. 4-H programs can be offered in the form of a traditional 4-H club that may offer many projects and activities or it may be organized around o n e p r o j e c t , activity, or interest area of young people. In either case, the program is g u i d e d b y community youth and adults with assistance from the McHenry County U n i v e r s i t y Extension staff.
