Driving up behind a school bus on Washington Street the other morning, we were prepared to pass carefully when suddenly the "stop" arm was extended. While many drivers are annoyed by this necessary safety procedure, we were pleased to be stopped. For the past two years we nave deplored the speed of early morning motorists near a school where very young children are being discharged. We questioned why bus drivers at this poinT^do not extend the "stop" arm after encountering impatient drivers who came up behind our halted car with horn sounding. The problem is compounded by a state law that appears to be reference vague in its requirements referred to to in what are as designated parking areas, which were not further defined. A lifelong resident who was in our office recently recalled when he was encouraged to buy a bus and start a route in one of the area subdivisions. As owner of the property being developed, he was informed by his salesmen that the one big question before buying land was, "How are my children going to get to school?" The enterprising land owner reacted favorably to the salesmen's suggestion. Later, the school district entered into an agreement with him to provide the service for the schools rather than as a private business. There are many of us who remember when our McHenry schools were not served by school-operated buses. Those to the north sometimes came by train; rural children arrived in what was the early version of car pooling. Most students came from within the city limits and more often than not they walked. Cafeterias are another plus of later years. We eagerly accepted a recent invitation to have lunch in East Campus cafeteria because we recalled a very tasty meal enjoyed a year ago. It was Friday, and the choices ranged from tuna boats to ham and cheese sandwiches, from a large vegetable salad to a fruit cup. And the dessert was a delectable and healthy concoction using cereal as a base. The meals are attractive and In addition, a light breakfast is provided for teens who are unable for one reason or another to have breakfast at home. Technical offerings in our schools also have been on the upswing for many years. How many remember when' how to repair a motor, operating anything more than a standard typewriter, were unheard of? There are folks today who still feel more time in the early years should be spent on reading, spelling and arithmetic. The lack of basic skills of some graduates would provide an argument for • that request. Nevertheless, a highly technical society makes demands on young people unknown to the age group most critical. Above all, let's not take away our modern and efficient cafeteria. In all times, food is the fuel for many accomplishments. Capitol Update: Utility reform treasures Gov.
