Another near miss for Chapel Hill's Sobb Third in PGA fall classic It has been a golfing season of narrow mines for Chapel Hill's Jim Sobb. Tne 27-year-old club professional finished one stroke behind the winner in a major Illinois golfing tournament twice. Last July Sobb was one stroke from winning the Illinois Open at the Elgin Country Club. Last week Tuesday, Sobb finished one stroke off the winning score during the Illinois PGA Classic at McHenry Country Club. Sobb's two round score of 142 finished behind Mike Harrigan's and Duke 141. Harrigan, a professional at igate Country Club, collected the top prize money, defeating Delcner in a playoff. It was just a matter who made the birdie putts," said Sobb. "On the last day, I had four birdies, but I also had three bogeys which I three putted. I very well could have shot a 67. The greens were tough to putt on." Sobb fired a 70 on Tuesday. Sobb was three shots behind the leader after the first day, shooting a 72. Despite the third place finish, Sobb was pleased with his play. "I hit tee to green very well. I just didn't make some putts. It was difficult to get close to the hole from 30-35 feet." Sobb had another reason to be pleased. The strong finish at McHenry Country Club, along with the Illinois Open, left Sobb with his best season ever in tournament earnings. He credited the success to "a matter of maturing." Johnsburg has a 14-4 overalll record and a 10-0 Northwest Suburban Conference record. PEORIA - It wasn't a good day, nor was it a bad day. That's how McHenry Warrior cross country coach Bill Hutchinson described last Saturday at Peoria. The Running Warriors took a fourth place in the 44-team Peoria Invitational. Hoffman Estates surprised everybody by taking the invitational title, edging out always powerful York 141-147. Pekin was second with 161, while McHenry scored 207. The fourth place was the worst finish for the Warriors in the last three years. Last year the Warriors were third, and in 1961 second. "I thought we could do better. The kids ran well, but not real good," said Hutchinson. Chris Creutz was the first finisher for McHenry, placing 21st in a time of 15:06. Steve Carby was behind him in 29th in a time of 15:15. Both Warrior runners were disappointed in their performances. Carby was second in this meet last year in a time of 14:57, while Creutz was 16th in a time of 15:26. "That's as fast as he could do that day," said Hutchinson on Carby/ "The conditions were ideal, it just that they didn't get out fast enough. Our runners were stuck behind before the corner. They had to work themselves back." While Carby and Creutz were having a sub-par day.. Brian Wright and Ternr Harth pulled up tne slack. Wright came in 34th in a time of 15:18, while Harth was 64th in a time of 14:44. "Wright did a fine job and Harth did a super job. Harth was 179th last year, and was 64th tiiis year". Marty Koleno was 59th in a time of 15:44, Jeff Pankiewicz was 121st in 16:13 and Jim Wautelet was 207 in 17:03. Jack Park of Pekin was the top finisher in a time of 14:26.2, wnile Jeff White of York was second in 14:30. Just two days after battling attempt to hurdle another big challenge. The Warriors travel to Pinecrest Country Club in Huntley for the Jacobs regional Thursday. Only three teams out of a field of 11 will advance to sectionals. The field includes golf weres Crystal Lake South, arrington, Elgin and Elgin Larkin. The rest of the field includes Algonquin, Crown- Dundee, Carv-Grove, Crystal Lake Central, Lake Zurich, Wauconda and Woodstock. Despite the challenging field, Chuck Cuda, coach of the Warrior squad, is confident. "We have a very good chance," said Cuda. "We need our third and fourth man to come through. We feel Kris Vehring and Tom Neumann will shoot their normal game. The rest of the squad has to come through." Tbe Warrios have been led by the consistent play of Toqi Neumann. The senior has been top medalist for the Warriors in many of the matches. Also on the Warriors side is that post-season edge the Warriors have built up. The Warrior golfers, under the guidance of Cuda, have come through year and year out in regionals, sectionals and then state. The Warriors finished second last year at state behind New Trier. Neumann is the only returnee from that second place team, which leaves a young squad. * "I have a feeling well play well. We have the tendancy to come through. We are keyed up for tournament play, said Cuda. Last Thursday, the Warriors closed out its FVC duel season out with a 156-198 victory over Woodstock. Tom Neumann was top medalist with a 37. r> The original name for basketball was "indoor rugby Who says wedding formalwear has to be expensive? 10331 Main Street, Richmond, IL 815-678-4902 Open 11 A.M. to 1 A.M.
