OCTOBER 12.1M3 Schools ® Marian homecoming commemorates anniversary The focus for this week, Oct. 11-15, at Marian Central Catholic High School is homecoming. Robert O'Mara, assistant principal in charge of activities, and Mrs. Deanna Liles, Student Council advisor, are working with the Student Council in organizing and completing tne various activities that have been planned for this special Homecoming Week which commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the school. The theme for these festivities is "As Time Goes By", which is to be reflected in the decorations, floats, costumes, and dance music used during the week. As part of this theme, each class has been assigned a decade (50's, 60's, etc.) which must be represented in their various floats, costumes, locker decorations and skits. On Tuesday, Oct. 11, events opened with a contest choosing the best decorated lockers exemplifying the theme of their era for homecoming. During the week students will earn spirit points which will be added into a class total. The class with the most spirit points at the end of the week will be awarded the spirit trophy at the pep rally on Friday. Tuesday was also entitled "Famous Person Day". Book fair planned Scholarship given Nierman has The Valley View PTO will sponsor a book fair during the ,week of October 17. It will be open to the public on Monday evening from 7%o 9 p.m. in the Valley View gymnasium. Books may also be purchased by the students during the week at the display times. Profits will be used toward the PTO goal for this year. Preceding the book fair will be a Short business meeting, where a vote will be taken as to the designated 1983 goal. Some of the considerations for this year are computers, playground equipment, field trips, and special programs. Members of tne PTO will be deciding this goal. Part of the publicity for the book fair was a poster contest in ide. Th were David Florkiewicz, Gina Eccher, Andy Stanfenbiel, Bekky Cross, and Eric Schultze. They were awarded a $2 gift certificate to be used at the book fair. That evening the Voyager Store, a new innovation for Thomas Nierman of 808 Regner Road, McHei been awarded a $500 schol to Southern Illinois University- Carbondale by the Garden Clubs of Illinois. Nierman, son of Thomas and Judith Nierman of McHeniy, is a junior studying horticulture and turfgrass management in the SIUC School of Agriculture's Department of Plant and Soil Science. He transferred to SIUC from McHenry County College, where he was a member of the agriculture club. He also helped develop a golf green for student studies at the college and organized golf outings for students. Nierman said he expects to work as a golf course manager, including responsibility for turf management. Eventually, he hopes to own his own golf course. The scholarship honors academic excellence and leadership in horticulture. juniors put < pep rally tnat day. On Wednesday, the students will attend at allrschool Mass celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of M a r i a n C e n t r a l commemorating deceased alumni and friends of the school. Thursday is "Backwards Day". Clothing will be reversed on this day as will the class schedule. As on Tuesday, an all- school assembly for a pep rally at which the sophomores and seniors will present their spirit skits will take place. Thursday culminates the float building contest and in the evening the students will attend a bonfire in the city park at 7:30 p.m. Hie students have decided to make Friday, Oct. 14, "School Colors Day". On this day Marian Central will have its final spirit pep rally, cheering the teams cm to victory for the homecoming games. Following the pep rally, there will be a homecoming parade beginning at 3 p.m. at the school. That evening the Hurricanes meet Marengo on the football field. Between the games, (sophomore, 6 p.m., varsity, 8 p.m.) the homecoming queen will be announced and the winners of the float competition will be awarded. After the games, a sock-hop for Marian Central students will be held in the gym. ^ Alumni are invited to a twenty-fifth anniversary reception held in the foyer of the school after the games. On Saturday night the Marian Central students will end a very full week of activities with the twenty-fifth anniversary homecoming dance, "As Time Goes On." Honored at this dance will be the homecoming court ecoming king and queen. The court includes, Beth and the homecor Penza, Diane Knox, Clare CoAerty, Yolanda Salazar, Michelle Boppart, Laura Jinga, Jim Mass, Chuck Hartlieb, Gary Tonyan, Steve Stilling, Darren Foran and Jim Militello. The Homecoming King will be announced at the dance. Alumni are also invited to attend as honored guests. Set meeting topics for semi-annual conference 1983, will have on display the ley Vi y Pi school. Cheese and sausage will also be distributed to complete the fund raising campaign. Sales were quite good in the fundraiser. Hie McHenry West Drama Club presents Come Blow Your Horn, a comedy by Neil Simon, to open its '83 - '84 season. The " ly will be offered Friday and turday, Nov. 11 and 12, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. in the West Campus Auditorium. Rehearsals are well under way. The cast includes the following: Erich Gaza as Alan erena Guy as Peggy Evans, Ed Serritella as Buddy Baker, Madeleine Ahern as Mrs. Baker, Ian Belton as Mr. Baker; and Carrie Miller as Connie Dayton. Tickets for Come Blow Your Horn may be reserved in advance by contacting the West Campus main office at 385-7077 on week days from 7:30.a.m. to 2:30 p.m, or they may be purchased at the door. Running for the school board and winning, "A Nation at Risk" and other similar reports, new school laws and their impact, will be among the topics when area school board members and superintendents meet at Larkin High School in Elgin Thursday, Oct. 13. Also included on the program is a resolutions review workshop. Hie semi-annual conference and dinner meeting for member districts of the Kishwaukee Division of the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) begins with a social hour at . 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Following an IASB report by Harold P. Seamon, executive director, IASB, participants will have a choice of four panel discussions. IASB is a voluntary service organization of about 915 Illinois school boards with offices in Springfield and Lombard. The appointment was announced at a joint meeting of McHenry County Board of Catholic Education and the McHenry County Catholic Education Foundation. As superintendent, Landers is accountable to the Area Board of Education and the Diocesan THOMAS LANDERS Director of Education. As part of his job description, Lanaers is to "oversee the implementation of diocesan and area policies governing all diocesan schools, both and secondary, and aM other educational programs in the area." Lanaers will assume his position immediately.
