PAGE 4 • PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 12. IBM ^•general^^" News Recall days as Math Freund employee Hospital contributions Nobody said I could print the following letter. Noboqjr said I couldn't, either. It is too interesting to keep for myself. Oct. 2,1963 "Dear Earl: "First off I would like to thank you for giving me and Math Freund's little girl mention in your column recently. It sure was appreciated. So I Hear by Earl Walsh DON KASUY PHOTOGRAPHY Lee Resce, executive director at Memorial Hospital/ and Nancy Langdon, president of the auxiliary, review the auxiliary's three contributions to the hospital's building program. Mrs. Langdon presented the third check for $50/000 last week to fulfill the $150,000 pledge. The money is earmarked to expand and improve the emergency services department. "Speaking of Math Freund, I wonder if you tasew that I worked for Math back in 1982 and 1933. In those days corn binders, grain binders, manure spreaders etc. were delivered to Math's shop unassembled and beside selling repair parts it was my responsibility to set these machines up. Also, those were the days of the 10-20 and 15-30 tractors that farmers used to plow and cultivate their fields, whenever (me of these machines broke down it was necessary that we made repairs as soon as possible right in the field regardless of the weather. The fanners really appreciated this and it was one of the reasons Math was so successful. "Math Freund did not become my father-in-law until 1936. e years aft when Marie and I tied the knot. For awhile I did not think this would happen as you probably remember all the mothers of McHenry warned their daughters to be careful of those Chicago boys as they were only out for the summer and were full of mischief. Of course, there also were the McHenry boys that did not like us coming out from Chicago and steal! ngtheir girls. Then one day I met Biff Meyers and Don Hayes and found out they were courting Chicago girls. From then on I felt what was good for the goose was good for the sander. "So much for that. Enclosed as I promised, I am sending you a picture of Math Freund racing on the Fox River in the winter time. Also a picture of Dar Granger And Math Freund with the ducks they had shot down in Beardstown. would like to have than back. "In signing off, Marie and I want you to know we appreciate your column as we re sure everyone else does. Don't ever stop. "Yours truly, "Bill * Marie Berndt" Those pictures of Math Freund ana Dar Granger will be appearing in an issue soon. I get little stories through the evine. tone tells me Clara Adams just celebrated her 87th r>irthday. Don't know if she had a cake, but the grapevine says that Marie Niesen baked an apple pie for the well-loved lady. My report may not be accurate as to the number of but it says Marie has cherry pies in the past. All I know is what I hear. --And a belated Happy Birthday to everybody's friend, Clara Adams. Back to the Long horn Friday night and Arlene told her friendly hostess to give us our favorite table. On their way out, the Henry Rodieks of McHenry Shores stopped to gab a bit. The Rodieks resided on the banks of Fox River, near the Weingart farm, at one time years ago. Mrs. Rodiek likes to read old time items (she doesn't look that old). She asked if I remember when the Riverside Bakery and Wauconda Bakery drove" through the subdivisions selling their goods. * That I didn't remember. I did well remember when Art Smith had his store on wheels and wrote about it one time. Mrs. Rodiek also recalled the days when Bill Schaefer and his boat constituted the Marine Route. Bill pulled up to the piers and left the mail in the boxes. The White Sox gave us a great summer. - Then came the playoffs. Quite a letdown after our hopes ran so high. We will be right back with our team nex^year. The orioles are a mighty good baseball team. Take note, John Busscher, wherever you are. The American League will win the World Series. Our bet is still on. But, don't bother to mail my loot. Bring it when you come Torth next summer. Add 12 members county dive team William Sheehan, McHenry MABAS Division V Dive Team captain, announced that 12 members have been added to the Division V Dive Team after completing an extensive 51 hour course in scuba diving. The course included 12 hours of classroom, 12 hours of indoor pool and 27% hours of open water, which included a night dive. ' AD divers are now certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors in Basic, Advanced Open Water and Search and Recovery. The MABAS Division V Dive Team is composed of members of several fire departments throughout McHenry County, and also McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency volunteers. Those certified divers who have just been added from the MCESDA ranks are Thomas Krieger of Richmond, Michael Mai of McHenry, Daniel Neumann of Cary, Michael Radcliff and David Ritzert of Solon Mills, Cheryl Yoshihara of stal Lake, Scott Cassell, »rt Miller and Tim Allen of the Cary Fire Protection District, kathy Komarchuk of the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District, and David Rudolph and Mary Jones of the Spring Grove Fire District. According to the team captain, William Sheehan, divers are needed in all areas of McHenry County. Within the past five years a new concept in rescuing a drowning victim has emerged. After lengthy studies and extensive research, it has been found that many victims of a cold water near-drowning may be revived and live normal lives even after they have been in the water from 45-60 minutes. The certified divers only respond at the request of a fire district in McHenry County to assist on a drowning, as the fire chief is that person legally responsible for this mission. ?spor If ai Parents to meet on substance abuse The Illinois Drug Education Alliance (IDEA), backed by the conference in Springfield Oct. 14-15, announced Mrs. Joan Martin, of Barrington, president of the state-wide organization of parent groups. IDEA, formed last fall by a handful of parent groups, "brings strength qnd unity to groups throughout Illinois by sharing ideas on substance ahiiftp education, and prevention programs, in our communities," Mrs. Martin said. IDEA now boasts more than 100 groups state. / Slated to address the conference, at Sangamon State University here, is Dr. Carlton Turner, director of Drug Abuse Policy for the White House and chief drug advisor to President Reagan. Illinois Governor James R. Thompson, in support of the •conference, declared November, 1983, as "Drug Free Youth Month" in Illinois. According to Council statistics, 83,000 persons died accidentally and 9 mill ion others suffered disabling injuries in 1962. This figure, the fourth consecutive annual decrease, represents a 6 percent reduction from 1981. Despite the trend in fewer accidental deaths and injuries, the most recent statistics indicate that accidents are the fourth leading cause of death (behind heart disease, cancer and stroke) for all persons, and the leading cause of death for persons aged 1 to 38. The council also reports that the total cost to the nation of accidental deaths and injuries last year was at least $88.4 billion. This figure includes $23.7 billion in lost wages, $12.1 billion i n m e d i c a l expenses, and $16.2 billion lost . in property damage caused by motor- vehicle accidents. spurgeon's M c H E N R Y M A R K E T P I A O 3 8 5 - 4 1 0 0 WATCH FOR OUR 8 PAGE THRIFT DAYS CIRCULAR I n Th i s Wednesdays Oc tobe r 12 th C i t i zen Paper SAVE 20°o -33°o-43°o For The Homo, Mom, Dad , & K ids Hur r y . . .Sa le Ends Sunday , Oct . 23 , 1983
