IM3 by Ken Wysocky Shaw-Free Press News County Board Chairman Clint Claypool Tuesday denied charges that his conduct as landfill public hearing chairman has been biased, and said he would not step down as chairman of the committee. The McHenry County Improvement Association (MClA) on Monday charged that comments made last week by Claypool cast doubt on his neutrality in the upcoming landfill public hearing. "I think that's an error. I don't think that's true," Claypool said hostility and prejudice to the views of a group that is scheduled to appear before him to present their case." I've go in an interview Tuesday. The MCIA claimed that Claypool said last week that the 8,000 signatures on petitions opposing the proposed landfill will have little influence on the county board's decision. The hearing," Claypool said. "I have MCIA presented the board with certainly not tdcen sides on this, the petitions. ^iMn't take a stand or side with The group also charge*} that an^e Tuesday's county board meeting and also to have three replacements for the three resigned members of the hearing committee < He said the general yt/i iviai News '• « '1 >7 _ ' b McHenry County Fairgrounds m M ' 1 • « 1 Memorial GPR class _ . .arged | Claypool said he is nonpitting "much stock" in letters he is receiving from people because they are "repetitious." State's Attorney Linda Nagle Seely pointed out that the state statute that governs the landfill public hearii proceedings has put and the county board difficult position. Under the statute, the county board must represent the people, but at the same time, county board members must reserve judgment until after the facts are presented at the public hearing. Claypool said an MCIA spokesman had asked Urn to resign as chairman of the public hearing committee, but he had refused. . "As board , the heat from people," Claypool said. "I don't want to put that burden on someone else's shoulders." Claypool said he hopes to have a time and location for the public hearing set by next i long as I sit as county chairman, I have to take spot for the pubHc hearings. Board member and Vice Chairman Lou Anne Majewski (District 1) and board members Ed Buss (District 2) and Thomas Huemann (District 2) have resigned from the panel due to potential conflicts of interest. Claypool also denied the MCIA'8 charge' that he instructed a county landfill expert to not cooperate with MCIA representatives. "I have only appeared at one meeting where the consulting engineers were present, Claypool said. "If they walked through the door right now, I wouldn't know who tney were. I have specifically stayed away from them. Claypool said he has purposely tried to keep a low profile throughout the proceedings because of the sensitive nature of his position. But that does not mean he is unwilling to talk to citizens about the landfill, Claypool emphasized. Sudden death from heart attack is the most frequent form of medical emergency, and the need for an adequate system in all communities to deal with this problem is highly recognized.
