V/ Saving Money Do-it-yourself help for getting car started SECTION 2 • PAGE 19 • PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 2, IM3 by Charlie Watters Last year we experienced one (the mildest winters in Illinois The unseasonable frustrated the best predictions and guesses all season i most people would jjke to see a repeat I'm sure, {ell Just have to wait and see that the winter brings. Speaking of repeats, it's time - my annual column about your car in shape for the weather. The few dollars now can mean the dif- .jrence between your car starting or not starting" this winter. In fact much of the •inter car maintenance we'll discuss can be done yourself - saving you high labor charges. I admire ̂ mechanically minded people who can give their car a tune-up (and who have the equipment to do so). But, if you're like me, the only way my car gets tuned is to take it to a local garage. In lieu of that, some of the ether things that help are to jemove and clean the spark plugs. If the plugs are badly pitted or cartoned, they will require replacing. Remember to gap the new plugs correctly. Most libraries will have books H /jo* • \ Si r e - • - • o A u on how to do this entire job steo- by-step. ^ What should be done to the battery? If your battery is the refillable type, fill up to the level line with water. Corrosion should be removed from the battery terminals with a solution of baking soda and water. Disconnect the cables from the battery and scrub the ter minals with the solution. I've found that an old toothbrush works best. After the corrosion has- been removed, reconnect the cables to the battery and cover the metal terminals with a light coating of petroleum jelly or grease. This prevents future corrosion. Be careful of the acid. It's important to check all the fluid levels in your car and add fluid where necessary. Check oil and replace with a winter grade motor oil if necessary. Along with this goes a new oil filter. Other car filters that should be cleaned or replaced if they are clogged are the fuel and air filters. Anti-freeze should be added and tested with a hydrometer. Ideally you'll want a protection level to be about 10 degrees lower than the coldest wnter temperature normally ex perienced in your area. Pick up some gas line anti freeze; it helps prevent fuel line freeze-up. while you're at it, check for loose or cracked hoses and fan belts and replace if necessary. When the unexpected happens and you and yours get stranded on a deserted stretch of road, a blanket, shovel, flashlight, and ice scraper are simple things that can mean the difference between life and death. When the temperature is hovering at 0 degrees or lower, you'll want to have everything going for you that you possibly can. In and of themselves these few steps may seem minor but they all add up to putting your car into the best shape possible for the upcoming winter driving season. United Way campaign enjoys a profitable start Pledges to United Way of McHenry County's annual campaign totaled 139,000 by mkK)ctober. General campaign chairman, Ron Prather, Crystal Lake, reported that pledges reached 17 parent of United Way's $225,000 goal during the first two weeks of the campaign, compared to six percent of goal achieved by the same date in last year's ffmpaign. According to Prather, "Our fine start is a result of several positive factors: early planning; an expanded campaign organization including over 200 tie from throughout peopi supported fay United Way; and improved economic outlook. ,7Early results have come from wnjcn formal campaign activity. As our residential, professional, •nail business and member agency campaigns progress, we are optimistic that our early momentum will continue. Prather indicated that, under the leadership of Dr. Richard Farmer, McHenry, 22 of 24 school districts in McHenry County are now offering their employees an opportunity to learn about and support United Way. Early reports of increased employee giving have been received from McHenry Elementary School District 15 (up 21 percent) and Crystal Lake Community High School District 155 (up 11 percent). United Way will provide $360,000 in financial support to 15 member agencies providing 26 human service programs to over 30,000 county residents in 1983- 84. Funds will come from local campaign revenues and the regional United Way Crusade of Mercy campaign through the United Way of Suburban Chicago.
