Judge Henry L. Cowlin set Dec. 7 for sentencing in 19th Judicial Circuit Court, where Riley had been on trial for the April 24 stabbing death of Richard Lehman, 21, on an isolated stretch of Schultz Road near Harvard. In his closing statements to the jury, prosecutor Gary Pack urged the jury to weigh the credibility of police officers and witnesses who testified against Riley. The state contended the defendant and his victim "went for a drive around, looking for grass (marijuana) and argued over money." Pack said Lehman parked the car on the country road and Riley attacked him with a knife. All the burglaries involved businesses located on Elm Street, which is Route 120, in McHenry.
