(IEPA) came to McHenry to open the sealed container and analyze the contents. The canister had been moved for storage to the barn in Knox Park. Wearing an industrial gas mask, coveralls and plastic ives, one of the specialists iroke the seal and opened the container. He used a syringe-type tool to suction some of the gray powder into a chamber with a long, thin glass tube. The glass tube contained a material which would change color, similar to a litmus test, if a suspected chemical was present. "That's definitely cyanide," said the IEPA specialist. The test material changed to a green hue. The specialist explained that the test performed Thursday morning would not reveal the concentration of cyanide, but it would indicate the presence of the chemical. McHenry Police officers on hand also called for paint thinner in an attempt to remove black paint which blotted out the shipping label. cyanide is an extremely poisonous chemical compound with an odor of bitter almonds.
