IVUJK IN - IM.AINI>KA1.EH - PHIDAY. NOVKMIIKH II. IM.V let's* talk Hampshire is out dazzled by Hurricanes By Steve Metsch Shaw-Free Press News Service WOODSTOCK - Marian Cent ra l ' s undefea ted Hurricanes, who had allowed just 50 points in the previous nine contests, slippea a bit Wednesday night. Hampshire scored a season- high 35 points on the Hurricanes' defense in the preliminary round of the Class 2A fflSA playoffs. But don't get the idea that Marian's first-ever playoff game was its last. . The explosive Hurricane offense, which came into the game averaging 34.4 points per tilt, went into high gear for nine touchdowns and a 61-35 rout of the Whip-purs at George Har ding Field. The winning total is the second highest in playoff history. The 1(H) Hurricanes will meet Ottawa Marquette, a 16-12 winner over Amboy Wednesday, battle of unbeatens in a in a Ottews iturday. Ottawa is top-rated in quarterfinal game Saturday. Ottawa is top-i Class 2A in both the UPI and AP wire service polls. "The only way they can lose is if they play on a wet day and they can't throw and have to rely on their running game," Hampshire Coach Ron Ellet said. Both aspects clicked for Marian. The rushing game piled pected up 246 yards while the passing ter_" attack earned 244. Starting quarterback Chuck Hartlieb Was 14-of-26 for 210 yards and one touchdown, but the spotlight belonged to running back Dan Fortin. The junior scored four touch downs, including an 80-yard kickoff return for an early 7-6 Hurricane lead. He wound up with 96 yards on eight carries apd caught one pass for 16 yards. I "I didn't expect this at all," Fortin said. "It was good blocking and their defense collapsed on Andy (Hartlieb) - they had too." •Hartlieb uped his season total to.1,031 yards rushing with 81 on ID carries. He scored twice, but it was Fortin's third TD that bfoke the game open. ;After Hampshire took a 16-14 load on Scott Olson's 32-yard fifcld goal with 2:59 left in the first quarter, Marian took over on its own 35-yard line. Eight plays later, Fortin bulled over from 10yards out with 11:51 left in the second quarter. "Chuck Hartlieb held for Tom will's point-after try but instead scooped the ball up and hit brother Andy with a two-point conversion for a 22-16 lead. And Marian was off to the races. "That third touchdown did it for us," Marian coach Don Penza said. "They (the Hurricanes) were wound up and when you are you get in trouble. They weren't reacting as well. After the 20th point, the kids relaxed and played the ball they're capable of playing." But so did the whip-Purs. Quarterback Scott Walker, who came into the game with more than 1,200 yards through the air, was 16-of-31 for 263 yards. The senior tossed scoring strikes of 51, 48, 61 and 6 yards. "I knew we'd score some points because we're able to score," Ellett said. "They just outhorsed us. Their quarterback is major college caliber. There's no doubt that they're twice agood as we are." The defeat was only the second in 13 playoff ap pearances for the .Whip-purs. The last time they lost in the post-season was in the 1978 Class 1A final. "They've done exceptionally well. When you're there (in the ) three times, you can't help ut have championship ballplayers," Penza said. didn't expect a blowout. Stbe Blue Streaks are deserving of the title. They are a good solid football team, and with any type of break, could go a long way in the playoffs. After the first six minutes of last Friday's game, I almost asked Greg On the Sidelin Dick Rabbitt two possessions and eight plays to lead 13-0. Things didn't look too bright for our Warriors, but they hung in there and held the Streaks. The Warriors finally scored in the waning minutes of the first half to go into intermission down 13-8. A sustaining drive was halted in the early minutes of the third period on the Streak 15-yard line. But the Strtiaks arose to the occasion and drove 85 yards for the score. On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, a Warrior fumble resulted in another Streak score - and that was the old ballgame. The same was a lot closer than the 41- 14 final score. Kenny Radic playing in his third conference game scored both Warrior touchdowns. The young lad has been plagued with injuries throughout his high school career. I am one to think if Ken would have been available for the whole season, the Warriors would have done better. Mike Milinac again was the workhorse of the Warriors. The unanimous choice for all-conference, Milinac did another outstanding job. I thought the Warriors did a fine job regardless of the score. My son, a Wisconsin graduate, and Herb are looking for bowl berth for the Badgers this season. Congratulations are in order to four Warriors who were selected to the Fox Valley all-conference team on Monday night. Mike Milinac was an unanimous choice for the team. The young Warrior rushed for just a little less than 1,000 yards this season. Averaging over six yards per carry is no small Teat. Even Walter Payton can't accomplish this with that team in Chicago. Corey Scott, the tight end, Mike Podpora and Mike Hill were also named. Podpora was probably one of the finest defensive players in the conference at the end of tne season. Hie eighth ranked Warriors are returning to state for the second time in the last three years. The Warriors finished third in 1981. With a healthy squad, the veteran coach is hoping for a fine performance by his team. No doubt, the warriors are not one of the favorites, but like Coach Chuck Cuda's golf team, there are a lot of teams that will be watching television on Saturday while the Warriors are competing for the state title. Let's hope Chris has recovered and the Warriors show heels to the rest of the field tomorrow at Peoria. Ken Ludwig has started basketball practice, Mike Shanahan is waiting for his first practice for his swimmers later this month and Pat Wirtz and his Lady Warriors should begin practice this week. ¥ ******* Finally, Jimmy the Greek move over. I had a 74 percent on my crystal ball picks this season. It would have been Higher, but a few times I ] heart instead of my es I picked head: with my conference record I pick the Hurricanes over Hampshire and the Streaks over St. Edward. Next week 111 pick the remaining teams in each class, which should be a lot of fun with teams all over the state. That frame was more exciting than some entire games. After Fortin's kickoff return, Walker tossed a 51-yard bomb for a 13-7 lead. Four plays and 1:35 later, Fortin scored his second TD for a 14-13 edge with Will's point after. Olson the booted his three-pointer for Hamshire's last lead. 16-14. Although the Whip-purs scored 35 points, Penza wasn't worred about his defense. "I'm not upset. Only 16 points were scored on our first defense. After that, points were scored with half our unit in there. That's not to take anything against Hamsphire at all. They executed extremely well," he said. Andy Hartlieb's 13-yard TD run put Marian ahead 29-16 with 8:01 left in the half. Fortin ended a 58-yard drive with his fourth TD, a nine-yard dash, for a 35-16 halftime lead.
