McHenry battled Crystal Lake Cen­ tral to 8-8 tie the following week, only to lose 22-8 in the fourth quarter. McHenry earned its first win by shocking Crown- Dundee 18-15. The Chargers were rated 10th in the state in 5A at the time. The Warrior squad seemed to have gained some momentum with its second FVC victory in a row, a 20-14 win over Cary-Grove. After a non-conference loss to Ridge wood, the Warriors lost a tough battle to Crystal Lake South 20-14. (Continued on page 19) By Mike Lamb Turning the corner in the Fox Valley Conference has been Joe Schlender's main ambition since taking over the McHenry - Warrior football helm five years ago. His program has been getting closer and closer to that goal, but one maior factor has been hindering McHenry's progress. The FVC is not getting weaker or leveling off in strength. The FVC has been getting stronger every year. As McHenry progresses, so has the Fox Valley as a conference in the Chicago area. It all adds up to total frustration for Schlender and his program. But there is also another side to the coin. Schlender feels good about being in the FVC and the direction its heading. "Obviously, if we played in a different conference we would be successful," said Schlender. "The Fox Valley is a tough conference to play in, but we want to play against the best. The con­ ference proved by its non- conference schedule it's as tough as any conference around." The Fox Valley con­ ference was 11-7 in non- conference games. Crystal Lake Central had the best record at 3-0. McHenry was 1-2, with losses to Morton East and Ridgewood.
