HO "The Gift of Hospice" is the theme for the first membership and fun raising drive of Hospice for McHenry County, now in minally u*. w«, monthf to live. According to Joan Brown, Woodstock, president of the new organization, "Hospice is first ana foremost a gift of a caring relationship among people living and dying. It is a relationship, not a (dace." Hospice goals are to relive pain and other symptoms associated with terminal illness and to provide supportive care to patient and family during the illnMs and bereavement. "tof campaign goal is set at $25,000. Hiaf amount will assure that we can pay an executive director and have Hospice* trained volunteer teams caring for patients and their family before the end of this year",she ocUU. The group did a county-wide survey last year to assess the need for Hospice. The survey showed that 280 patients- families would have Denefited from Hospice dining 1982. With the patient-family at its center, an all-volunteer Hospice- trained team works closely with the patient's physician. A team may include a hospice nurse, lay volunteers and other specialists - a member of the clergy, a mental health professional, legal counsel or a physical therapist. To date, Twelve volunteers have completed a 32- hour training course in hospice care. "To make the dream of Hospice a reality, we need generous membership con- tributions," Ms. Brown said. Anyone joining by Dec. 31 becomes a charter member. A limited number of art premiums, donated by professional, award-winning artists, will be given to the major contributors.
