The pilot program will be conducted next summer in Washington, D.C., by Robert C. Baumiller, Ph.D., S.J., director of the genetics division at Georgetown University Hospital. According to Dr. Baumiller, a Catholic priest who is also professor In the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown Medical School, the intensive course, which will be held at Georgetown four half- days a week for 10 weeks, will train experienced pastoral counselors as resource people for clinics, individuals and families struggling with birth detects. "We plan to achieve this," he says, "by giving them in formation and experience within the clinical and counseling setting, knowledge of the scientific underpinnings of medical genetics, and reflective time on the expanding fields of ethics and moral theology." A second site will b^ selected later in the year by Dr. and the of Dimes, and ultimately tbe results of both programs will be evaluated to develop and produce a curriculum and materials which can be used throughout the country and abroad. Ideally, pastoral should be an adjunct to enetic counseling, says verly Raff, Ph.D., March of Dimes vice-president for Sessional education. "When family history of severe birth defects and • high pro: thei risk of recurrence," she says, "many parents need and: seek spiritual guidance on difficult choices thev never imagined they would nave to face/' In accepting the 125,000 March of Dimes grant, Dr. Baumiller also spoke of "the difficult decisions individuals and couples must make as a result of advancing genetic technology." Tbe Georgetown program, he said, "will develop and test a curriculum and materials to provide pastors of various denominations with an un derstanding of the ramifications of clinical genetics, so that they may act as counselors to those who seek them out or are referred by clinics." In addition, he said, "they will be able to act as resource persons for their respective denominations. general u News Review hospital report for alcoholism program Kane, Counties, announcing its regular board of directors meeting, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.
