Our whole country rejoiced when news came through that World War One had come to an end. The hearse was provided to mark the burial of Kaiser Wilhelm. Pictures were taken on unpaved Waukegan St. The large white house to the right is uftere Mary Powers resides. Safety hints: Maintenance important, for old cars By Secretary of State Jim Edgar Early winter forecasts are for severe weather, while the Farmer's Almanac predicts more snow this year. Prepare your vehicle now so when the weather gets cold your engine will start and run smoothly without stalling. Preventive auto maintenance is especially important today because the average age of cars in America is now seven years. More than 16 million used cars have been sold by automobile dealers over the last two years. With last year's mild winter, many motorists neglected to maintain their vehicles. As a result, milliops of oars -are on the road that have been driven for two years or more since their last engine tune-up. Don't wait until your car breaks down or refuses to start before getting the proper maintenance. Batteries lose power as the temperature falls, so replace an old or weak battery. If you replace the battery, also check the ignition system. A trained mechanic can tell you if your vehicle needs a complete tune- up or merely a set of new spark plugs. Test the antifreeze in your car, truck or recreational vehicle, and check all belts, hoses and radiator connections. Test the windshield wipers, wiper blades and washer system, and have plenty of washer fluid. Check the defrosters and heater, and make sure the ice scraper and brush are in the trunk. Low temperatures also affect tire pressure, so check it periodically. Be sure your ties and brakes are in good con dition.
