Every year, in the United States alone, it gobbles the sight of 4,000 people. More than 1,000,000 people, age 35 or more, are losing their sight from glaucoma right this moment without knowing it. Early detection is the goal of the McHenry Lions club, working with the Lions of Illinois foundation, the non-profit, charitable arm of the Illinois Lions clubs. The local club will provide a visit of the Lions of Illinois Mobile Glaucoma (Eye) Screening unit Nov. 28. The unit will be located at McHenry Market Place from 9 to noon. "Many people are blinded by glaucoma needlessly," said Ron Bierman, local club president. "We hope the adults in our community will take advantage of this free screening." Blood pressure tests are also offered at the unit, as well as a test for diabetes. Persons planning to be tested for diabetes should eat either one of two meals about an hour-and-a- half before visiting the Lions unit. A sandwich meal should consist of two slices of bread with at least one slice of meat or cheese, one piece of pie or cake, coffee or tea with sugar, or milk, or a soft drink, plus anything else. A dinner meal may be eaten, to be comprised of one serving of potatoes, dried beans or corn, with two slices of bread or rolls, one piece of pie or cake, and coffee or tea with sugar, milk, or a soft drink, plus anything else. However, President Bierman reminds those who already know they have diabetes or high blood pressure that there is no nee to be tested by the Lions unit. They should continue their regular visits to their own doctors Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 23, there will be a service for both Greenwood-Ringwood parishes at the Ringwood United Methodist Church, at 7:30 p.m. Anyone who wishes to par ticipate is welcome. I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Brought to you by Phil OoKIIng How did the custom of cheering and cheer leaders start in foot ball?... When the first intercollegiate game was played in 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers, Princeton players got the idea of trying to upset Rutgers players by yelling every time Rutgers put the ball in play...But there was one thing wrong with this plan... Although the yelling did upset Rutgers, at ^the same time, it bothered the Princeton players because they had to use too much effort in yelling and it distracted them from their own play..:So, for the second game against Rutgers, a Princeton man got the great idea of having some of the students along the sideline do the yelling insteod of the players...A few studen ts were chosen ond taught what to yell and when to yell. And that's how the tradition was born. Can you guess who I* the only player In foot ball history to make the official All-America football team as both a lineman AND a bock? ...This usual record it held by Bronko Nagur- ski...Me was picked a* an All-American at tackle and also at full back when he played for Minnesota in the late 1920s. I bet you didn't know...that November is the best time to buy a new automobile. And now's the best time to see Keith leothers or myself for an automobile loan designed to fit your budget and take advan tage of 10% financing!
