Hundreds of children in this area may face a toyless Christmas without the generosity and sharing of those who have already been blessed. To help the more fortuante voungsters to share with the less fortunate, Toys For Tots, will again be collecting toys and games in Pearl Street Park this year. On Dec. 10 and 17, when opportunity to depost their once- loved toys and games in the Corps Toys and games for children T infant to 13 are needed, is requested that they be new or -like-new because the Corps does not have the time, pertoWhel or money to repair broHp foys. Deck Klemm (It- Crystal Lake) is the recipient of the 1983 Legislative Leadership Award presented by the Illinois Probation and Court Services' Association. According to George M. Gallagher, president of the state organization, the selection was based on Klemm's responsiveness to probation- criminal justice issues and his active support through his legislative efforts. By Bruce Spangenberg, Extension Adviser, Agriculture, McHenry County Many landowners have found spruce trees to be very valuable additions to the landscape. Most are readily adaptable to a variety of situations and relatively easy to grow. Like lust about all plants, however, y are prone to occasional pest roblems. Spruce trees in cHenry County have been plagued by both eastern spruce jus! the pr Mi and Cooley spruce gall aphids this year. Spruce gall aphids are ac tually! adelgids, insects which closely resemble aphids. They are soft-bodied, may be covered with waxy materials, and are about the size of a pinhead. Females overwinter on spruce and Douglas fir trees, laying eggs in spring. These eggs hatch as the buds swell, and the young adelgids cause the needle bases open late in the season, producing insects that will fly away to lay eggs on another spruce. These eggs willTiatch into young which will overwinter and stan the cycle over the the branch sticking through them. However, these branches are weakened, appear mangled, and oftentimes break off to enlarge, forming a gall which protects them. These galls will following spring. Eastern spruce gall (adelgids) primarily attack Norway, Colorado Blue, white, and red spruces. They produce a gall about 1 to 2 inches long and around inch in diameter. These galls are pineapple- shaped, and will have the end of >reak off easily, e gall aphids produce a gall Junior Achievement fund kickoff Over 50 volunteers met Saturday morning. at the Lakeside Center in Crystal Lake to kick off the 1983-84 fund raising campaign for Junior Achievement in McHenry County. Dates and goals for the campaign were outlined at the meeting. The official dates of the campaign extend from now through Dec. 31, which should encourage business persons to take full advantage of the tax benefit. The goal for the cam paign is set at $10,000, with a challenge goal set for $15,000. Robert D'annof Junior Achievement gave a •presen tation on essentials of fund raising and detailed new J. A. programs, while Carol Moen- ning,1 northern division manager, spoke about the existing J. A. programs in the county. John LiUie is the McHenry County Chairman for J.A., and the area team captains for solicitors are: Louise Rogers, Morena Marcio Anderson, Dick Maiman, and Dave Dunlap. Sue Carr, Dan Holverson, ana Joe Mirsberger will be handling the public relations. Also present at the meeting was Patti Robb, a senior at Lake Zurich High School, and a four- semester member of Junior Achievement. . She gave a presentation on what J.A. has meant to her, and how it has helped her develop from a shy a very confident young Cooley spruce (adelgids) will produce a gall about the same size and shape, but it will be on the end of the shoot. There will not be a branch out. thus they often pine cones. These usually are noticed when they turn brown in late summer or early fall. Colorado Blue, Engelmann, Sitka, and Oriental are the main targets of They also are a problem on Douglas fir, but do not form galls. Fall is a recommended time to treat spruce trees with gall problems. Spray with either malathion or diazinon, at a concentration of 2 teaspoons of concentrate per gallon of water. An alternative time to spray is in spring just before the buds begin to swell. Spraying galls after they appear is ineffective since the insects are protected by plant tissue.
