Basketball season opens for FVC teams The past weekend opened the door for all Fox Valley Conference schools to begin the basketball season, with the exception of the McHenry Warriors Remember the date, Nov. 18, th*$&rt of the basketball season forsome of the Fox Valley schools. Woodstock opened with a win over little Salem of Wisconsin without the services of eight players still in football uniforms. Marian Central had to cancel out its own team in its own tourney Genoa-Kingston, irho did not play football due to finances, will take the Hurricanes place in the Marian Holiday Tourney. With both Woodstock and Marian Central in the football finals in Normal, why do the basketball coaches have to suffer ? From reports, nine of the 10 Marian Central basketball players are still in a football* uniform. At least eight of the Blue Streaks the Warriors will face this season on the court are still in football togs The football coaches of the Fox Valley went on record a few weeks ago, stating the basketball season should begin around December 1. Their big concern was if the IHSA would begin the football season a week earlier. Wisconsin is one state that begins the football season before Labor Day and are finished before the basketball season is on its way. On the Sidelin Dick Rabbitt McHenry basketball coach Ken Ludwig said, "I would like to see the season start later. We generally have some football players on the squad, and it takes a little time for them to get adjusted." I completely agree with coach Ludwig. But one must remember the IHSA is governed by principals, and most of the schools in Illinois do not play football. When you are in a small school, where the only action is basketball, the sooner you get started the better for the community. Four months is a long time for any one sport. The kids get tired, the coaches get tired and the fans get tired of such a long season. In my humble opinion, which will not be accepted, I would suggest either beginning the football season earlier, or not allow a team to participate in basketball before Thanksgiving Holiday tourneys, or the first week of December. "My old friend Bill Day, former coach of the Warriors, always insisted, "all teams ate ready by this time (Labor Day) with the summer workouts." Contrary to reports, I am not hitting the national scene, although I do thank SIH for the confidence placed in me. Last week I did manage to get seven of the 12 I picked into the finals for this weekend. Although disappointed I did not do better, I feel I will do better with the finals. Who would have thought last Tuesday a Hurricane would have hit some of the playing fields in Illinois, namely East St. Louis and Walnut. My picks for the championship this weekend both at Normal and Evanston are as follows; tA -- East St. Louis over Addison Trail, 5A -- Glenbard West'. i Peoria Limestone, - 4A -- Woodstock over Washington, 3A -- Monmouth over Anna Jonesboro, ZA -- Marian Central over Bloomington Catholic (hope Greg Johnson will forgive pie for this pick), IA -- Yorkwood over Maroa-Forsyth. Woodstock with Marian Central, along with Monmouth and Monmouth Yorkwood should set a record of teams for a community winning state championship* Don't forget, tonight at 7 p.m., the Warriors open their basketball season against Sterling at the Sycamore tourney. I'M»K Itl'LAINDEAIER - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2S, 1983 4% let's' talk m Sports Hononegah gets revenge, but McHenry edges St. Ed's We're the type of team that will improve as time goes on," said AAc Henry Warriors boys' coach Ken Luctoig. He is all set to start his 17th season at the Warrior helm. -*• <m#>m Mil g i . v-v*w*r EARLY PROGfe^SS continued from page 20 as much playing time as Peterson last year, but he did score 4.4 points a game. "I would like to have both around the hoop," Ludwig said. "Pete (Peterson) isn't real fast, but if we can get the ball into him, he can score. Corey Scott can score. Both post people can shoot. We have to get the ball to them." Last year, Ludwig wanted his team to go inside more to Peterson, but the team ended up shooting more from the outside. At times, McHenry was one of the hottest shooting teams in the conference, but once it hit a cold spell, McHenry had troubles. Ludwig said he was disappointed wit his team last year. The way the offense was designed, the ball was to go inside more. He feels it will be different this season. "Outside shooting will be a weakness. We should be able to get the ball inside. Pressure on defense was another area Ludwig was disappointed in last year, and he expects that to change this season. "I didn't think we did a very good job pressing. The kids playing are capable of playing the press. It will help our offense a little bit. Right now, I'm satisfied with the progress made." Ludwig has a number of good wing candidates, which he expects to help out in that pressing defense. One of those players, along with Scott, was all- conference football player. Ludwig expects that ex perience to help out on the basketball court as well. Craig Hill, the starting quarterback for the Warrior football team is expected to see some playing time. Pat Dunne, also a football player, is also to play a big part at wing. i Ludwig also reported that senior Tim Schmitt has looked good at point guard, and Scott Freund could also possibly see some playing time at wing. Ludwig said Ross Vehring is expected to help out at the post positions. Dave Toussaint, the leading scorer on the junior varsity last year, is expected to give Hill and Dunne a rest at the wing position. Bill Schmidt, also a senior, has been a pleasant surprise according to Ludwig, and could play a big part in the season. Ludwig feels he is a nucleus that will contend in the FVC. But he sees Dundee-Crown, Woodstock and Crystal Lake Central as the top contenders. He said he has watched Cary-Grove this season already, and the Trojans looked good. "There is no outstanding team in the conference. It's one of those years anybody on any give day could win. The team that puts a string together will win it. I feel if our team wants it badly, we should be in there." As usual, McHenry will play a tough non-conference schedule. Ludwig believes in a tough non-conference schedule. "The teams we play are no patsies. I think the tougher the team you play, the better you get. The better the opposition, the more solid the team becomes. Our kids play a good schedule." The Warriors open up the season with the Sycamore Holiday Tournament this weekend. The Warriors were knocked out of the tourney early, losing to Sycamore and Belvidere. The Warriors are expected to open up against Sterling tonight at 7 p.m., with Sycamore and Marengo also in their bracket. After opening up FVC play against Cary Dec. 2, the Warriors will play Grant that Saturday and Grayslake the following weekend. Later on, the Warriors have dates with Fremd, Deerfield, Im maculate Conception and Waukegan West. McHenry JV's sweep pair The junior varsity swept two matches last Saturday, defeating St. Edwards 634 and Rockton Hononegah 54-12. A total of seven Warrior wrestlers recorded pins in each match. ROCKTON - Last year, the McHenry wrestling team got off to a flying start with two wins in a double dual at Rockton High School. McHenry thrashed Rockton Hononegah 54-9 and edged St. Edwards 28-25. TWs time around, it was a little different. The Warriors did beat St. Edwards for the second time in a row, 36-28, but lost to Hononegah 30-29 Saturday. It was Hononegah carrying out revenge. "It Ewe took Hononegah a little lightly. They were out for blood," said Warrior coach Marty Sobczak. Despite the one loss, Sobczak was happy with a number of his wrestlers. "Eric Gaza looked good," said Sobczak on one of his eight returning let- terwinners. Gaza defeated Dan Ogburn of St. Edwards 5-0 and defeated Brandy Schoersver of Hononegah 11-4 at 119 pounds . Heavyweight Dan Mohnen, another returning letterwinner, recorded two falls. "Dan Mohnen showed a definite improvement," said, Sobczak. Mohnen pinned Jim Johnson of St. Edwards and Bruce Kinney of Hononegah. Sobczak was also happy with two sohomores who had no previous varsitv experience and two matches each. Chris Mann, at 96 pounds, defeated Eric Peterson of Hononegah 1&4, and won by forfeit in the St. Edwards match. Dennis Gaines, ̂ the other sophomore, recorded two falls at the 167 pound division. He pinned Greg Dougherty of St. Edwards and Dan Peters of Hononegah. "Both look good. Two pins is no small accomplishment, " said Sobczak. Ric Conner and Rolund Hunt were the other winners against St. Edwards. Cornier took the 126 pound match by pinning Dave Walker. Hunt pinned Jeff Schodin at 155 pounds. Russ Bunday at 106 pounds, Ray Sanders at 112, Bob Sarabia at 132, Ray Lance at 145 and Bob Hawley 185, were all losers against St. Edwards. Bunday and Sarabia were the other winners against Hononegah. Bunday won by forfeit at 105 pounds, while Sarabia won 8-1 over A1 Krombeck at 132.
