KKCTION 2 - PAGK 2 - PI.AINDEALER - FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 25.1M3 general News Red Cross member drive opens in McHenry Recognize Klemm for effort aiding use of snowmobiles The Illinois Association of Snowmobile Clubs, Inc., recently awarded state Rep. Dick Klemm (R-Crystal Lake) the 1983 Legislative Merit Award. Klemm was recognized for his efforts to increase the recreational possibilities for snowmobiles. He successfully sponsored a bill removing the township population restrictions for snowmobile use in town ships. Previous law restricted the use of snowmobiles to posted roads in townships with less than 5,000 inhabitants. House Bill 576, which was signed into law by the governor, allows township officials in townships with some more than 5,0000 inhabitants to allow snowmobiling on posted roads. 'I sponsored the bill because I am particularly pleased with the hard work of responsible snowmobilers in local and state organizations," Klemm said. "Snowmobiling is an important part of the social and economic systems in McHenry County." k Payment € f Light Bulb * Service AT Sunnyside Foods 4216 N. Wilmot Rd. About 500 cartons of cigarettes and $200 in change were taken from the Art Smith Grocery and Market east of the river. Part of the money was in a cash register and the rest in a hidden bank bag. Entrance to the store was gained through a rear door. Not content with the quantity of merchandise obtained, they alto entered a nearby garage, loaded a car belonging to the store owner, and drove off. 10 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 28, 1973) About one in three persons polled at both McHenry high school campuses have indicated some experience with the use of marijuana. That was one of the results of a 10-item survey taken in which 81.4 percent of the student body indicated their experience with tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and other drugs, including heroin. Approximately one-third smoke tobaco, while 40 percent drink alcoholic beverages. Thirty-six percent of the student body feel that drugs are not only used at school but also at home and before or after school. In •addition, one of two students believe their parents know nothing at all about the drug scene. The board of High School District 156 approved an increase in the rate of pay for substitute teachers from $22 to $25 per day. The administration has found it difficult to obtain substitutes, a and one reason is believed to be that other nearby school districts are reimbursing at the rate of $25. IRS says area residents are due tax refund checks The Internal Revenue Service is trying to locate some area residents who are due a refund from their 1962 Federal Income Tax Returns. According to J.R. Starkey, IRS district director for northern Illinois, 2,525 refund checks worth $1,126,908.06 were returned by the Postal Service as undeliverable in this area. Nearly 200 taxpayers have refund checks in excess of $1,000 waiting to be claimed, including 18 who have checks over $5,000. The largest refund check is for $30,725. The refund checks are for individuals only. Starkey noted that the taxpayers may have moved or changed their last names during the year and failed to notify the IRS, or the handwriting may simply be illegible. When a refund is returned by the Postal Service, the IRS attempts to find the taxpayer and deliver the checks, but there are always some who cannot be found. Taxpayers who think they may be due a tax refund and have moved or changed their name during the year should contact the IRS. Chicago taxpayers should call the IRS at 435-1040 to claim their refund. All other northern Illinois taxpayers should call toll-free 1-800-424-1040. Included among these taxpayers are Sherra Dowdy, Fred and Janice Notz and Geraldine Sertain.
