Border Patrol recruiting team at MCG ---- general The U.S. Border Patrol it hiring for 1984. A recruiting team, representing the Border Patrol of the US. Immigration and Naturalization Service, will be taking applications in rooi# 144 at McHenry County College from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28. The public is invited. The Border Patrol is a highly trained officer corps. As a mobile, uniformed law en forcement organization, its primary mission is detecting and preventing the smuggling and illegal entry of persons into the United States. To quality for employment, the applicant must be a United States citizen, possess a valid driver's license, establish an eligible rating on the written examination, appear before an oral interview panel, be in ex cellent physical condition and not have reached age 35 at time of appointment. The age limitation may be waived if the applicant is presently in a federal civilian law enforcement position or has served in such a position in the past. The ability to read and speak Spanish is a plus. Applicants are subject to a personal background in vestigation to determine suitability for employment. Weil known to residents along 8,000 miles of land >6nd water borders, thesejrfflcers work around the^lodfon assignments in all kinds of isolated com munities. Often the border is a barely discernable line in uninhabited deserts, canyons or mountains. The Border Patrol story is one of long hours and hard work. It is a story of hours, days and months of dull, routine patrol, highlighted on occasion by a few moments of suspense, action and danger. The basic operation of the Patrol is river or line watch. Illegal entrants , are ap prehended by watching the borders at all hours of the day and night at points most often used by border violators. Line watch, carried out on-foot and in motor vehicles, often is per formed in conjunction with officers observing from radio- equipped observation towers. Light observation aircraft and helicopters are also used to spot illegal entrants. Because of the relatively small number of officers, it is impossible to detect every violator at entry. The Patrol utilizes a highly effective electronic sensor system along the northern and southern borders of the United States. Modern equipment available to the Border Patrol Agent in cludes police pursuit type automobiles, four-wheel drive vehicles, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, complex com munications and sensing devices. Agents also use some age-old methods of detection. They patrol the border/ for tracks made by persons entering unlawfully. Four-wheel drive vehicles equipped with drags are used to smooth out the earth's surface, making it possible to detect footprints left by illegal entrants. Drag trails are maintained in strategic locations. Sand traps have been con structed in some areas where the terrain forces passage of aliens through constricted areas. These are maintained in much the same fashion as the drag trails. Where tracks are found, ground forces follow until the person is overtaken and immigration status determined. Other duties of the Border Patrol officer include checking traffic along principal highways and byroads; checking tran sportation terminals; searching freight and passenger trains and railraod yards; and checking the status of alien workers on farms, ranches, and in business establishments near a border. Shortly after a new patrol agent alters duty, he or she is sent to the Border Payrol Academy at Glynco, GA., for 16 weeks spent acquiring a basic knowledge of immigration and nationality laws and regulations, the Spanish language, duties and authority to act, first aid, fingerprinting, physical training and self- defense, firearms training, elementary criminal law, evidence and court procedure and other relevant subjects. The agent must also become proficient in the use of equip ment needed for the effective performance of his or her duties. First duty stations are generally located in the southern border states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. yci ICI ai News County Hospice to hold Thanksgiving Hospice for McHenry County will have a Thanksgiving reception No. 26 to honor the seven artists who have con tributed their works as premiums for the Gift of Hospice '83 fund drive.
