McHenry delegates attend National 4-H Congress SECTION S - PAGE I - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 39. IW Two McHenry County youths are among 48 Illinois 4-H members selected to attend the 62nd National 4-H Congress. They are Lee Tomlinson, IS, and Debby Griggs, 15, both of McHenry. The winners were selected by the Cooperative Extension and the awards were arranged by the National 4-H Council. Miss Tomlinson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tomlinson. She was selected as a state winner on the basis of her overall achievement as a nine year 4-H member. During her nine years of 4-H club work, she completed over 80 projects ranging from gar­ dening to veterinary sdence and from sewing to pddnting and crafts. Her most successful project is her registered Hampshire sheep, which are helping to pay for her college education. Miss Griggs is the daughter of Mrs. Loreta Griggs. She was selected as a state winner in the She has been a 4-H member for eight years and is a junior at Johnsburg High School. She is certified in cardie pulmonary resuscitation (CPU) and has been a volunteer worker at the community hospital. Approximately 1*600 delegates, representing all SO states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, are at­ tending the congress. Among highlights of the National 4-H Congress are a national fashion revue, numerous recognition banquets, cultural tours to key points in the Chicago area, and a final assembly with guest speaker John R. Block, secretary of agriculture. In addition, national and sectional record winners will be an­ nounced and over 290 national and regional scholarships, valued at ̂ $2tHM$0, will be awarded. VA pensions are paid to wartime veterans totally and permanently disabled from circumstances unrelated to their military service. Ibey are paid also to survivors of war­ time veterans who are in need. Unlike compensation paid to those disabled because of military service, pensions are affected by income from other sources. The first check to be received by beneficiaries reflecting the cost-of-living increase will be the check received on or about Jan. 1. Veterans and their survivors who are receiving benefits under "improved" pension plan of 1979 will receive the increase. Pensions for veterans and survivors under the ̂ old" plan remain fixed and payable *t the rates in effect in 1978. But those Tates are protected against termination that would other­ wise result from cost-of-living increase in their income from Social Security. "Old" plan recipients may request transfer to proved" plan a^any VA will carefully review each application to advise to chooee the plan which works best to their personal ad­ vantage.
