By request of the Public Safety Committee, the McHenry County Board has proclaimed Nov. 27 through Dec. 3 as Winter Preparedness week in McHenry County. Winter storms can kill. Each year, thousands are killed or injured by automobile ac cidents, home fires, overexertion, exposure and freezing, carbon monoxide poisoning, falls, and elec trocution from downed wires. Based on steadily rising statistical averages, it is estimated that more than 450 Americans may die from cold- related causes this winter. . Most important, keep posted on weather conditions. Your local radio and television stations and Weather Service , Radio will keep you informed on area forecasts. Even a few hours warning may enable you to better cope with severe weather. Snow flurries can suddenly turn into a vicious winter storm causing us to measure a snowfall in feet instead of in ches. Forced home isolation can then be a very real possibility, but certain preparations will ease the hardships you and your family could suffer. There are two prin/ary needs to be met-food and heat. Stock an emergency supmy of food. Even if you are within walking distance of a grocery store, their supplies may dwindle if roads are Closed to supply trucks. Include food that requires no cooking or refrigeration, or have emergency cooking facilities, in case of power failure. Natural foods allow the body to produce its own heat efficiently, especially quick-energy foods like raisins and other dried fruits. Try to keep an adequate supply of fuel in your home. Conserve fuel by keeping the house cooler than usual and temporarily closing off un necessary rooms. Power lines are downed easily during winter storms. Have a flashlight, candles and matches, a battery- powered radio and extra bat teries. Each year, many people suffer injury, illness and even death due to winter storms and their effects. Keep the following safety tips in mind during the coming winter season. Stay indoors unless it is absolutely necessary to go out. If you do go outside, avoid overexertion. If you add unaccustomed exercises, such as shoveling snow, pushing a car, or even walking too fait or too far, you risk heart attack or stroke. Wear the' proper clothing. Whether outdoors, or inside with little or no heat, wear several layers of loose-fitting, light weight warm clothing instead of one thick, heavy garment. Watch for frostbite and other results of cold-weather ex posure. Frostbite causes numbness and white or blue tinted skin, most commonly in fingers, toes, ears and the nose. No one drives during bad winter weather unless they must. However, business obligations or holiday plans often make winter traveling necessary. The following tips on traveling in winter weather may help you have a safer trip. First, be sure your car is in good ^condition and properly serviced. Snow tires or chains are a must. Plan your trip carefully, listening to weather and travelers' advisories and keeping an alternate route in mind. Let someone know where you are going and what time you plan to arrive. Travel by daylight and use major high ways if possible. Try not to travel alone. Keep your gas tank as nearly full as possible, especially if you are unfamiliar with the route you are traveling or are entering open country. Even if you restrict your winter driving to short, local trips, certain supplies can help in an emergency. You should always keep basic items such as a windshield scraper, battery booster cables, a tow chain or rope, a bag of sand or gravel, and a flashlight in your car. For longer trips, you may want to add a transistor radio (with extra batteries) a first aid kit; road maps; a small, noin perishable food supply such as nuts, dried fruit, and candy; matches and candles; blankets; and two or more large coffee cans (for sanitary purposes and to burn candles for heat). to you can see a shelter within a reasonable distance; disorientation comes quickly during a blowing snowstorm. For heat, turn on the car engine for brief periods. To avoid deadly carbon monoxide poisoning, always leave a downwind window open slightly, also make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow when the engine is running. Exercise from time to time by clapping your hands and moving your arms and legs. Do not stay in one position too long, but do not overexert yourself by shoveling or trying to push the car. Leave the dome light on at night as a signal to rescuers. If more than one person is in the car, sleep only in shifts. Drive carefully and defen sively. Don't try to save time by traveling faster than road and weather conditions permit. If a storm begins to test your ability and endurance, seek shelter. Each year thousands .of families mark Christmas as a time of tragedy instead of joy. Why? Because fire takes its toll in lives and property. Most of the fires can be prevented by following a few common sense tips; your family can enjoy a happy and safe holiday season. Electrical fires occur throughout the year, but during the holidays they increase sharply. Be sure your outlets and circuits are not overloaded. Decorative lights are often used year after year; check carefully for frayed and worn cords and replace or discard them. Also, use care when placing decorations which use bulbs, especially in windows where curtains or drapes can ignite easily. When making out your Chirstmas shopping list, con sider a gift of life-give a smoke detector. The McHenry County Board is deeply concerned aoout the safety and well being of all citizens of McHenry County. They have required that McHenry County ESDA make availble additional information winter safety. McHenry County Emergency Services goes into action when winter storms strike the area, ^coordinating emergency agencies in emergency operations from the Emergency Operations Center loated at the County Courthouse. McHenry County ESDA is comprised of 15 different, but related divisions, such as Auxiliary Police-Deputies, Radio Telecommunications and Scuba Search and Rescue.
