Illinois snow fighters ready for winter's wrath BECTIÔ T̂Ap̂ JiaMPLAINDEAIXR - WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER M. HP When wind-whipped weather wrapt winter's wreath around the Chicago area, icing in tersections and snarling streets with snow, the Illinois Depart ment of Transportation will be ready and rolling. The Department has 775 men and 272 trucks prepared to spread salt and plow snow in the six-county Northeastern Illinois district, Secretary of Tran sportation John D. Kramer announced. Sigmund C. Ziejewski, the Department's district engineer, said that the men and trucks will work on both the Chicago area expressway system and the 3,000 miles of state-maintained arterial highways in Cook, Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane and Will Counties. They will work out of the 23 highway maintenance yards in the district, Ziejewski said. The Department will continue to emphasise lower use of rock salt in order to lessen highway and environmental damage, Charles H. McLean district traffic and maintenance manager, said. Truck crews are being in structed to be extremely cautious in using salt, McLean said. - A total of 91,000 tons of salt - costing more than $1,840,000 was used last winter in the district, he said. DECEMBER 4. 10AM-2PM •ADULTS'2- tHIlMBO'P There were 89 snow warnings for the district and the area had a total of 26J inches of mowfall. Maintenance crews have been installing plow frames, along with tailgate and hopper spreaders, on the trucks, McLean said. Hie in spection of the equipment just got under way. All salt-spreading equipment is calibrated regularly, he said, to ensure an even distribution of salt - and the maintenance of environmental preservation levels. With wintry weather in prospect, McLean suggested that motorists begin thinking about winterizing their vehicles and added: *'Importantthings to check include the cooling system, the battery and the windshield fluid reservoir, which should be filled with an anti-freeze solution." The Department uses the services of a consulting meteorologist in order to get advance warning of adverse weather conditions. The information goes to the Communications Center in the D e p a r t m e n t ' s d i s t r i c t headquarters in Schaumburg and is relayed to the district's highway maintenance yards. In addition, the Com munications Center is in radio contact with the men and trucks on the road. general News WL man listed fair after traffic accident 1 United Way drive at one-quarter of goal Pledges to the 1983-1984 United Way of McHenry County's annual campaign have reached 150,996,26 percent of the $225,000 goal. According to Ron Prather, Crystal Lake, United Way's general campaign chairman, "Our campaign continues to make excellent early progress. Revenues at Nov. 1 were more than double pledges reported at the same time last year. More important is the fact that pledges from the same donors who contributed last year are up $6,300, an increase of over 11 percent." 0 Prather added, "Despite our fine start, achievement of our ambitious goal is by no means assured at this time. To actfeve goal, pledges must increase $32,000 over last year, a 16 percent increase. We are hopeful that efforts to expand our base by increasing the number of contributors throughout the county, com bined with increased giving amongst prior donors, will enable us to reach the goal." To incrratf its contributor base, United Way has expanded solicitation of employers and expanded its direct mail solicitation of county residents. Employers reporting first time significant gifts to United Way in recent days have included Huntley Consolidated School District and the Special Education District of McHenry County. United Way's direct mail campaign to county residents not participating in United Way campaigns where they most of the larger communities in the county cooperated in this effort by signing letters to residents of their communities. The very large task of preparing the mailing was undertaken by the McHenry County Senior Citiziens Council. Senior citizens at each of the council's several centers throughout the county volun teered their time to prepare letters for mailing. Several United Way member agencies have reported results of their employee campaigns: Blackhawk Council, Boys Scouts of America, Catholic Social Services, McHenry County Senior Citizens Council, Woodstock Christian Care, Friendship House and McHenry County Youth Service Bureau. , United Way campaign proceeds are used to support 26 human service programs provided by 15 member agen cies to over 30,000 McHenry County residents annually. Raymond M. Nasebandt, 55, of Wonder Lake, is listed in fair condition today in the intensive care unit of St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, where he was taken Tuesday night following a two- vehicle traffic accident. Linn, 40, of McHenry, was westbound on Route 120 and went through the stop intersection at Greenwood Road, striking the vehicle driven by Nasebandt. Linn was cited by sheriff's police on a charge of disregarding the stop sign.
