Village gives up plan to resurface Thompson Road SECTION 2- PAGE 17 • FLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER M, 1W If then was any hope that federal funds might be used to resurface Thompson Road, it was steamroUed at Tuesday night's Wonder Lake village board meeting. Village' President Duane Zeman said the proposal to resurface Thompson Road between Route 120 and Wonder Lake Road was scrapped because it became too costly. In a preliminary estimate com missioned by the McHenry County Highway Department, the total cost was put at $940,199, including $12,560 for an engineering study. The construction cost includes grading, patching and 22-foot- wide surface with a 6-foot shoulder. Jim Rakow, McHenry County superintendent of highways, explained in a letter that the cost of the project would exceed money designated for the Wonder Lake area, $939,929. In Disorderly conduct charged addition, he wrote: "I suspect that the local matching shares of $84,939 for the Village of Wonder Lake and $150,043 for the Greenwood Township Road District would also present quite a problem." Rakow suggested the village and township use their own money to resurface the road. It would cost "less than $50,000 per mile," Rakow said. Greenwood Township Road Commissioner Larry Hay questioned the logic. "It's kind of funny that for us we can put a two-inch mat on it," Hay said. "For federal money, you have to go through high-priced engineers." Hay acknowledged the projected cost was "out of our league." A1 Zeman, village superin tendent of public works, accused the county of reneging on the program. "Are these the same people that asked for $15,000 to do our part of the road?" he asked. "We got nailed all along the line." The money will be redirected to resurface Hancock Drive on the east side of the lake. general yoi ici ai News Jaycees offer five kinds of trees On Dec. 1, the McHenry Jaycees will start their annual tree sale.
