I!>8:t ^Fpgeneral^^™ news Botanic garden holiday programs scheduled throughout December The Chicago Botanic Garden will sponsor a series of evening programs every Tuesday in December at 6:45 p.m. to highlight the annual holiday display of decorated trees. They are open to the public free of charge. On Tuesay, Dec. 6, at 6:45 p.m., the Ariel Ensemble will present a Christmas concert of baroque, light classical and seasonal music on the harpsichord, flute and cello. On Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 6:45 p.m. the Lake Forest Youth Symphony will perform a special holiday concert of classical and seasonal selections in the Exhibit Hall. Young musicians through high school age from local communities are selected for the orchestra program directed by Charles Emmons, Jr. The concert is open to the public at no charge, as are the following two Tuesday evening programs. On Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 6:45 p.m., children of all ages are invited for an Evening with Sa^nta. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will tell stories, including the traditional, "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and listen to holiday gift requests. On Tuesday, Dec. 27, at 6:45 p.m., Folk Tales, Toys and Tunes by Gerry and Becky Armstrong will be featured as family entertainment in the Exhibit Hall. Stories, games, songs and dances are included in this "Once Upon a Time" program. The Chicago Botanic Garden, owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, is located o on Lake-Cook Road just east of Edens Highway in Glencoe. When the kids are getting a bit too boisterious, try this strategy: As each child arrives, he picks a number from a Christmas stocking. A duplicate set of numbers is kept in a brightly-wrapped box. Then, when thing are getting overly boisterious, signal drawing time by ringing a bell or flicking the light on and off. Draw a number from the box and the child with that number gets to choose his prize from the basket of gifts. Use a sliver of soap to sketch an outline of a scene on a window. Paint the outline with black tem pera paint. 2. Pour several cups of soap powder or detergent and a bit of water into a bowl. Mix with a hand beater or an electric beater, adding enough water to make a stiff meringue texture. Add pos ter paint or food coloring along with the water when beating the suds. 3. Spoon a different color of soap into each cup of a large muffin tin. 4.
