According to Ms. Boggs,due to the cut-back in state suppoort, 4- H clubs state-wide are par­ ticipating in a $4,000,000 fund drive. This club will use its share of the proceeds for their own operating expenses and their share of this fund drive. Items which can be recycled include newspapers with no magazines or junk mail in­ cluded. glass containers with all plastic and metal removed, "tin" cahs which have been washed and flattened, used motor oil, cardboard and brown paper bags tied in easy-to- handle bundles, and aluminum scrap of all kinds including 100 percent aluminum cans. The public may also elect to receive 33 cents per pound for crushed all-aluminum cans which contain no-bimetal cans in the mix. If the cans are not crushed or are. mixed with other types of beverage cans, the price paid will be 31 cents per pound. Also, on the second Thursday of each month, the Defenders will pay for both aluminum cans and glass containers - 33 cents per pound for the cans and 1 cent a pound for glass containers. This collection takes place in the rear parking lot of McHenry FS (4004 West Elm Street, McHenry). Borden Street should be used to reach the lot. The collection is held from 9 to noon. CONST ANTINE ORBEUAN Constantine Orbelian, pianist, will perform in the theater of Crystal Lake South High School Saturday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m., as a part of the Community Concerts Association of McHenry County 1983-84 Concert Series. Orbelian has performed with numerous American orchestras including the San ^ancisco Symphony and the >h Sym­ phony. He performed ior eight consecutive years at the Bach Festival in Berkeley, Calif, and in 1981 drew acclaim for his debut performances in France with the Chamber Orchestra of Budapest. As a recitalist, he has per­ formed in many North American cities including Washington, D.C., London, Ontario and Nashville, Tenn. Constantine Orbelian recently completed his musical studies at the Juilliard School of Music, New York, where he was an honorary scholarship student. Admission to the concert is by membership only. County girls win leadership awards McHenry actors in Christmas Carol' Director Greg Mullen an­ nounced his cast for Elgin C o m m u n i t y T h e a t r e ' s production of "A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley" to e presented in the lower level of Hemmens Playhouse Dec. 9, 10, 16, and 17 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 11 and 18 at 3 p.m. Playing Scrooge and Marley respectively are Mark Steen- sland of Elgin and Tom Duddy of Stream wood. Andrea Pace of McHenry is prominently featured as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Tom Newman, also of McHenry, and Peter Wojnicki of Harvard join with residents of Algonquin, Bartlett, Dundee, Hanover Park, and Schaumburg as well as other Elginites to complete a cast of over 30 performers. . Rt. 120 McHenry Debby Griggs, McHenry, and Betsy Payne, Woodstock, have been awarded the national I DARE YOU Leadership Award by the McHenry County 4-H organization. The award was presented at the 4-H Recognition Banquet held at Andre's Steak House, Richmond. They were selected for the award in recognition of their excellence in character, personal develop­ ment, and leadership potential. In addition to the national recognition received the award provides the recipients with a copy of William H. Danforth's book I Dare You, and a per­ sonalized certificate. Danforth wrote the book out of his own experience. He dedicated much of his time and philanthropy to youth work. In the book, he challenges the readers to aspire to their highest potential, to attain constructive lives of service and citizenship and to commit themselves to excellence. The I Dare You Award is made available by the "I Dare You" Committee of the American Youth Foundation in cooperation with the county 4-H office. This is the forty-third consective year of the award program. The American Youth Foun­ dation, founded in 1924, is a non- sectarian, not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing programs for youths. The purpose of the Foundation is the discovery and enhancement of leadership skills and the promotion of balanced growth and development. Fire damages car The Wonder Lake Fire Department was called to the scene of a car fire at the intersection of Howe and Wonder Woods Roads, Wonder Lake. Walter Hadeler, of Crystal Lake, noticed that his car had been back-firing and the engine erupted into flames when tha hood was raised. McHenry County Sheriff's, Police reported that the interior of the auto was destroyed: Damage was estimated at $3,900. Junior Achievement is giving "hands on" business experience to high school students in McHenry County. In conjunction with advisors from local in­ dustries, students have the opportunity to select, produce,, and market their own products. During the 15-week semester, sophomores, juniors, and seniors learn how to manufacture a product for sale. They elect officers, sell stock to obtain start-up cash, and ac­ tually obtain a company charter. Throughout the semester, wages are paid, along with commissions earned for selling their products. At the end of the semester, the company is dissolved and dividends are paid to the stockholders. Junior Achievement offrs these high school students a unique opportunity to see the business world in action for themselves, through direct participation. ,fATo keep Junior Achievement active in McHenty County, advisors are needed to assist in the continuation of the program. A fund raising campaign is currently taking place. Volunteers will be calling on local businesses and individuals to assist the fund raising efforts.
