During the deer rutting season, which will last through December, 'the high-strung animals dash onto the highways, regardless of traffic, to follow their instincts, resulting in a dramatic increase in deer-auto collisions. In the span of a few days, nine deer were involved in accidents jnvestigafecT by McHenry sheriffs police. It 1b le that more incidents in area have gone unreported. If the driver does not want the deer, any Illinois resident may claim it. If two or more deer are killed in a collision, the driver is eligible to poasess as many carcasses as he wishes. However, spotted fawns may not be taken under any cir­ cumstances. A person possessing a deer killed in a vehicle collision must report it within 24 hours to the Illinois Department of Con- servation, Region 11,110 James Road, Spring Grove, (815)-675- 2385. The office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, If the deer is killed weekends or holidays, the report must be made on the nest regular workday.
