Fanciful to practical Fashionable gifts for men By Flereace De Santis NEW YORK (NEA) - A tie is supposed to be the dul lest of choices in men's gifts. But you couldn't call the $5,000 tie created by Count ess Mara dull. It's made of cut velvet with two accent motifs in lSk gold and diamonds. If that's a bit rich for the gift budget, there are also $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000 versions. For the really modes* budget, Countess Mara does the $250 tie, with rubies and sapphires set in 14k gold on embossed silk- satin velvet. Of course, the regular Countess Mara ties, with their handsome fabrics and signature coronets, make the tie anything but a boring gift. Any accessory can be an interesting gift if it's well choaen. Alfred Dunhill of London offers an extensive collec tion of belts in every type of leather from inexpensive calfskin to crocodile with gold-plated buckles. Their colorful cashmere mufflers from Scotland are both warm and handsome. The revival of the suit-pocket handkerchief suggests a gift of one or more of their silk squares in mixed colors or paisley. The return of French cuffs on dress shirts has revived the designing of cuff links. A wide range is avail able, from inexpensive silk black braid in knotted cuff links to links in gold fram ing such semiprecious stones as onyx or tigerseye There are even gold coins mounted as cuff designs, or jeweler's designs in gold, engraved silver or platinum, with gemstones. In outerwear gifts, consid er the sweater, a big fashion item this season. Nothing dull here either, not when cardigans look like St. Croix' camel wool trimmed with Ultrasuede or their shawl-collared ribbed grav wool with leather-look buttons. Pullovers have gone colorful, while still classically styled as moat men like them. Typical is Jockey International's white crew neck with double red striping around the ribbed neck, across the chest and on the sleeves below red blocking from the shoulders down. It's red at Jaeger, too, for a V-neck pullover with argyle rows in white and navy. Younger men will like the fuller cuts and dropped armholes in designer sweaters such as Ron Chereskin's geometric-pat terned wools and mohair blends. New looks in outdoor jackets offer handsome, practical gift possibilities. London Fog's Outdoors Unlimited collection includes a new anorak of rugged cotton blend lined in Thinsulate for lightweight warmth. Its roomy raglan sleeve gives space for suit or bulky sweaters . A double closing of both tipper and snaps keeps the wind out, the hood is a tip-off and mid-thigh length improves on the cropped length usually seen in coun try jackets.. In sport jackets, any man would love the new leathers, especially the Mazer, as done at Countess Mara in glazed lambskin or soft suede. Designers give younger men the European broad-shoulder look, with bolder details such as quilt ed back yokes. The look can he found in better men's shops. (NKViPAPn SHiaanuM. Fancy and even flast)y hosiery completes the look, especially when the dress is \ knee-short and flounced. depend on the Purse. A cocktail call for Hot Sox' pantyhose in matching color, with black seams not just in back, but all around the leg. A flirta tious short lace dress could take their navy, red or lavender sheers lively with coin dots. Lace tights are a general favorite because they look good with any smooth fabric, such as taffeta, chif fon, crepe or satin. But there are other patterns to wear with such fabrics, including Gambit's snowflakes on charcoal, claret or black sheer nylons, or the match- sticks of magenta and teal on black sheers at James Hosiery. The elegant Gay '90s loved hosiery with the side embroideries called clocks. On a shimmering nylon tight of rose, gray or white, Hot Sox runs a clock of a climb ing vine with small, colorful flowers. Their net nylon pantyhose in white, black or navy gets a row of diamond shapes for clocking. At Hue the clock is a simple tuxedo stripe on an opaque tight. When in doubt about eve ning leg glamour, choose the quiet effect of texture. At Christian Dior, the leg is texturized in Spanish medal lion pattern, while Adolfo offers a basket weave. Such textured pantyhose, good for a wide variety of clothes, generally come in a wide choice of colors. Even white shows up, as many holiday chemise crepes are in vanil la. Glitter also has gone discreet,- generally mixed with color. Hot Sox' shimmer nylons mix gold with black or teal. Jeweling is applied lightly, as in pearl sprays at the ankles.
