Psychology and Stage Both in Rabbi's Life Automobiles For Sale mm CAREER JUGGLER -- John Krug not only serves as assistant producer of the long-running off-Broadway musical, "The Fantasticks," but the ordained rabbi, 31, is also studying for a doctor of psychology degree in clinical psychology at New York City's Yeshiva University. W NEW YORK (AP) - As the assistant producer of an off- Broadway show, John Krug regularly sees actors assume a variety of personalities. As an ordained rabbi and a stu dent at Yeshiva University's Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Krug wants to help those same actors who may face confusing cues in their personal life roles. So, even while he continues to work with the world's longest- running musical, "The Fan tasticks," the 31-year-old Krug is studying for his doctor's degree in clinical psychology. problems i where acceptance -- by the au dience, the director, the critics and fellow actors -- is of such dramatic importance. "Performers spill their guts out every day in front of total strangers/' he says. "They can't see individuals out there in the audience and thev don't know them. It's analogous to a washcloth that is wrung out. The tremendous intensity, concentra tion and energy required take a toll." Actors have other unique pro blems, he adds. The perpetual transient state of the profession -- traveling companies, audi tions, short-lived productions -- makes it difficult to establish roots and foster a sense of security. "And their constant perfor mance and projection of other personalities blur the boundaries of self and stage characters," Krug notes. "It's difficult to sus tain interpersonal relationships when an actor doesn't know where he stops and the next per son begins.' Krug now works with actors in informal ways, helping to main tain a sense of family among the troupe and getting performers to talk and work out their anger, depression and other difficulties. ; r'We are in backstage, and tensions I people can arise," he "Actors cant bring their per sonal problems on stage. They must cover up. The audience is not going to feel sorry for them." Krug is not yet licensed as a therapist so he gives referrals as well as arranges for appoint ments for emergency ana ongo ing treatment. Krug first became involved with "The Fantasticks" when be was in charge of the technical crew for a student production at the university. Then he went to see the professional group. "It became so alive for me because I had already studied the play. I Just fell in love with the show," said Krug, who began working with' 'The Fantasticks ' as understudy to the lighting director after a chance en counter with producer Lore Nolo during Krug's 12th visit to see the show. At the time Krug, a resident of Teaneck, N.J., was a senior at Yeshiva College, the undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences for men at Yeshiva University. Then "things Just happened. I sat in on auditions Just to see how they were done ana, one day, so meone asked what I thought at the performers. Then I became a regular at auditions." By 1975, "I was involved in almost every aspect of the production," said Krug, who has been assistant producer since 1977. Since he joined the group, the annual cast parties have been kosher. "They started doing that so that I could eat at the parties," Kruj! said, "and the food was so Krug finds his background in religion, psychology and the theater makes him well qualified to deal with the special world of treadled an the stage. He i I an incident when he was asked to eulogize, at a remembrance service neld in the theater, an actor and friend who had been murdered. After he finished, the audience stood up and clapped before the empty stage. At first, Krug was puzzled. "After a moment, I understood.
