"Connors wrestled as well as he has all year," said Sobczak. Chris Mann, at 98-pounds, lost his first match of the season, when he lost to Mark Leader of Deerfield, 11-2, in the second round. Mann, now 7-1, had pinned Mike Vece of Stevenson in the opening round. He finished the tournament with a 4-3 win over Franz Oehler of Lake Forest. Sobczak was happy with the sophomore wrestler because it was his first big tournament. Three other thirds came from Ray Lance (145), Roland Hunt (155) and Jeff Greany (185). 5 Lance received a bye in the first round, but was pinned by Dave Singer of Jacobs in the second round. Lance pinned Ron Lamke of Cary-Grove in the wrestlebacks for third place. Hunt opened up with a 15-8 loss to Gary Marconi, but received a bye in the first round of the wrestlebacks. In the second round of the wrestlebacks, he pinned Steve Koser of Jacobs in 3:24. Sobczak pointed to that match as model match. Hunt was winning 13-0 when he got the pin. "That's the kind of match if you had a video machine and saved the video for 15 years page 20 down the line, you could use it to show what is a good wrestling match." In the consolation round, Hunt was pinned by Gerth Yoe of Lake Forest. Jeff Greany defeated Troy Tahor of Zion-Benton,18-6, but lost a tough one to Tom Elliott of Wauconda. Elliott was only winning 1-0 when he pinned Greany with 17 seconds left in the match. Greany came back by pinning Gary Nattrass of Cary-Grove in 2:13, and defeated Cissar Doval of Deerfield in the consolation finals. "Hie third place is really a team finish," said Sobczak, who was also pleased with Dave Sarabia. Although Sarabia did not place and lost two matches. Sobczak said he gave the team fired up by not giving up. "He never gave a indication of quitting, even though he was on his back for most of the match and behind 17-0. He was on his back for most of the third period. It would have been easy to say, that's it. But he didn't. He gave the team moral support."
