game Lady Warriors fall to Grayslake, Wauconda PAGE 20 * Pl.AINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14. 1983 First one is sweet news for McHenry Mark Peterson's 21 lifts Warriors over Grayslake i ON THE MARK -- is Mark PetersorTSTs he captures a rebound from the reach of a pair of Ram cagers under the Grayslake net last Saturday at West Campus. By Mike Lamb A number of well wishers were in the coaches office at West Campus waiting for McHenry basketball coach Ken Ludwig to appear last Friday night after a game with the Grayslake Rams. When he appeared he was congratulated for his team's first win of the season. Ludwig responded by saying, "the monkey is off the back." On the fifth try, Ludwig's Warriors finally put one urjider the win column, defeating the Rams 53-45. For Ludwig, it was sweet news. "We have been playing at to lose lately, instead of playing to win. We could be 5-0 right now. Instead we're 1-4," he said."I think we have improved every ballgame, but the progress has been very slow." A patient floor game was where Ludwig saw the most progress. "Up to the fourth quarter, we played a good floor game. We didn't have too many turnovers. At Grant we only had 12. Tonight we had five turnovers. That's a good floor game. A bunch of those turnovers were in the fourth quarter. "It's just a matter of these kids playing more games. The more they play, the better they will be." Even with a good floor took McHenry three quarters to run up sfomewhat of a commanding lead over Grayslake. The game wasn't really put away until McHenry's 6- foot-6 Mark Peterson grabbed an offensive rebound and put it right back up for two and fouled. He made the free throw to give McHenry a 47-38 lead with 3:45 left in the game. Peterson ended up McHenry's top scorer with 21 points. Added with Corey Scott's 11, that kind of scoring had Ludwig smiling- Before the season even started, Ludwig said the offense had to get the ball to Peterson and Scott inside. When the Warriors were scoring, that's exactly what they did. "Tonight we did a good job inside. Corey and Pete did a good job scoring. Pete could have scored 30 tonight," said Ludwig. Helping the Warrior of fense roll, Dave Toussaint came off the bench to score 15. Most of the 15 by the senior, came from the outside. "Dave Toussaint did a heck of job coming off the bench. He gave us a little outside help." Scoring was slow in the first half. McHenry managed to score 10 in the first quarter, while Grayslake only scored six. Peterson scored McHenry's first six points on two baskets and two free throws. On the other side, it was Todd Parola who kept the Rams afloat. He scored all three of the Rams baskets from the outside. Parola led the Rams in scoring with 16. "When that number 13 gets his hands on the ball, he's dangerous," said Ludwig, on the 5-foot-8 senior's outside shooting." The Rams stepped up the scoring in the second quarter, as grayslake outscored lVJpifenry 9-6 in one stretchCto come within Continued on pog* 19 injury, while Renee Mezzano is out with a sprained finger. • • The Lady Warriors will meet Grant this Thursday for their last game until after the holiday break. After Christmas, the Lady Warriors will compete in the Dundee-Crown first Annual Charger Classic, Dec. 27-30. The Charger classic is a 16-team tournament. McHenry is scheduled to open the tournanment against Streamwood at 9:30 Tuesday, Dec. 27. The winner of the McHenry-Streamwood contest will play the winner of the Round Lake-York game. The losers of the two games will also play each other in the con solation bracket. McHenry wrestlers settle with third LAKE FOREST - McHenry Warrior wrestling coach Marty Sobczak will take the third place his team earned in the Lake Forest Invitational last Saturday, but he can't help wishing for more. "In my heart, we could have won," said Sobczak. He spoke after watching six of his wrestlers earn places at Lake Forest for 115 points. Deerfield won the invitational title with 166 points, while Wauconda was second with 138. Lake Forest took fourth with 98 Mj, Stevenson 78, Jacobs 70, Zion-Benton 44 and Cary-Grove 40. ' , - McHenry found itself in seventh place before the wrestlebacks. The Warriors fought back to third place during the wrestlebacks and held third through the finals. When it was all over, two Warriors had second places, while four other took thirds. Again, the Warriors were winning via the pin route. McHenry recorded 13 pins for the tournament, which Sobczak said was above average. Russ Bunday at 105-pounds and Ric Connor at 126 lost their championship matches and had to settle for second places. Joe King of Deerfield defeated Bunday 10-3 for the 105-pound title. Bunday had pinned John Cooper of Wauconda and defeated Bob Joor of Lake Forest 8-0 to advance into the title match. Sobczak said Bunday was a key factor in the McHenry third place because he^ took ' on wrestlers from thj? top four teams in each of ms matches. Connors was pinned by Deerfield's Scott Praise in the 126-pound title match in 3:18. Connors had pinned Mike Cabello of Jacobs in 1:48 and Vince Smith of Stevenson in 2:16 Continued on pog* 19 By Cindi Kinsala The Lady Warriors were defeated in battle twice, losing non-conference games to Wauconda and Grayslake. Thursday, Wauconda's Lady Bulldogs ran over the Warriors, out-scoring McHenry 20-8 in the first quarter. The Eagles went on to post a 74-23 win. On Saturday, the Warriors challenged the Grayslake Rams. The game was closer, but the outcome was the same. McHenry lost 51-34. "We"couldn't find anything that would work to stop them (Wauconda). They were tall, talented, quick, and they didn't have many errors for turnovers. They were a good team. Hopefully the best we'll see," said McHenry coach Pat Wirtz. The gap between Wauconda and McHenry widened in the second quarter as the Bulldogs scored 20 more points in the second quarter, to the Warriors three. The half ended with McHenry down 40-11. Two Wauconda players, Pam Nuspl and Saundra Cetmak, combined for a total of 34 Bulldog points. Against Grayslake, the first quarter started out as in Thursday's game, as the Rams outscored the Warriors 15-8. The Warriors were able to add only thee points in the second quarter and the half ended with the Rams in the lead, 27-11. The third quarter brought the Lady Warriors back to life. Sarah Prust scored nine points, while Greta Larsen shot for two baskets. Andee Norton and Renee Mezzano each scored one basket, as the Warriors out- scored the Rams 15-11. This was not enough to close the gap, as Grayslake still led after three quarters by 12, 38-26. Grayslake's Heather Dunbar was the game's high scorer with 16 points. Prust was high-scorer for the Warriors with nine. With only three games under their belt, the Lady Warriors have already been plagued with injuries. Peg Chilvers will be out for five-to-six weeks with a knee Sarah Prust of McHenry fights for the ball with a Grayslake player during Saturday's contest with the Rams. Prust led the Warriors in scoring with nine points. i' nm*! iiciai ft ^if FURNITURE 4 BEDDING mwm ss McMNOVANTIOCH - *-*v:a--t.: 4, a , '%m D IA u S A LEIII j* KM Si E® FfR$t PAYMENT...MARCH 1,1 approved CREDIT 20% 10 60% OFF EVERY LIVING ROOM 20% 10 60% OFF 1EVERY OCCASIONAL PIECE mmmmm SAVE BIG ON BEDDING VALUES Iron « Mine mortmain 0 Hying roon auites iMu lovoaaa'.t and matching cnairs Magnllicen latrlci herculom kylom Poly s Vnvtts in 1 wide range g t in eyery dy« Kara • your chance It actum you decor at groat gaylngi Cnoou Iroir. uoir group! ami ttttcaaoi wall uniti accsnt piecti end mucr more Ivory style imiaoii tu hurryt. : abmlm&ks;. mr mo.u ilwnsliol/unr t(f fw virtu r \hr'// n n iiwirf Simmons, Sealy, King Koil, Serta, Chiropedic & More 20% TO60% OFF EVERY BEDROOM 20% TO 60% OFF EVERY SLEEP SOFA •"*>» • to»« cftw u'Xjffi fw ire* oh« ii know you, ,, sggjj h»r^ 11« ih# 0iii Irui • 1 *>»» yo< SAVE 20-60% •CLOSEOUTS ̂ SAMPLES Choose Iroffi our ontlro (election 0' oofliourr. suite! on« 000 giocoi a' moot roducoo tale prlcai tvtry llyle ovory llntltl every dtligr II e all on aale' Hoaddoarot cneiti and MS nigm SUMS how 1 your oogortiinity 10 gal Ml' 11000 (Ola you va always ••moo md 11 the gigged savings ever cnoou iha ute mat 1 right far you end the (tyie you warn Big (election-don t miss itl " ^i$i •DISCONTINUED MODELS 20% TO60% OFF SS EVERY CHAIR & RECUNER 20% TO 60% OFF EVERY DINING GROUP iiww rurnnyre on ^ your min will limlcfr yoil mum >, xrvt/qp/ - rpp we're out of our mfaubl ; What aonaaltonal vnues Pick Irorr 1 (oa it occasions etiairt accon chain rocllnori wall-huggeri Pick the laDrtci you want in tnt coiori you naeC You re Bound u lint "you-" chair t van (election ot dinettes ane Jitunj rootr suites glut many ode Ditcei &olect Colonial comem Horary tradltioni itytos in mint wood tinnhas and colors Ail gricoc to toll tail Hurry When we were reminded that ottr tovwrtory *a loaded Mh hundreds of 1M3 floor sampfea, discontinued styles and odd lots that be sold before 1964, m almost flipped!
