r SECTION X - PAGE 12 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1S83 ^--genera l News Grandma Sez: Pray that we find peace VA offers properties at low interest rates Some 700 properties acquired by the Veterans Administration are available for purchase by both veterans and non-veterans at an annual percentage rate of 10 percent. The 30-year mor tgages are available in the six counties of Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry and Will. Grady Horton, director of the VA regional office in Chicago, said the offer was being made until Dec. 31 of this year, and that in addition to the low in terest rate only a small down payment is required. According to Horton, many of the properties have been rehabilitated and are in move-in condition. Others are sold "as is." They are listed for sale at prices similar to comparable properties in the neighborhood. In addition, if a purchaser of a VA-owned property pays cash, either with his own funds or through a loan from a source outside the VA; the list price will be discounted by an additional 10 percent. Another Christmas, an* another new year just around th' corner. The blessed holiday brings nostalgic memories f'r so many o' us, but we turn our thoughts t' these times an' say a prayer that another season may see th' world at peace. We know the prophesies, but try t' believe that mankind may find th' error o' his ways an' "Turn his swords into plow shares," an' live in brotherly love. Now, as we celebrate th' birthday o' Christ, let us rejoice wi' family an' friends, an' be glad; but' remember those bereaved o'er loss o' young men in service, t' keep Christianity an freedom alive in th' world. Shameful as it is, that fighting goes on 'n on, year after year. This granny recalls our president remarkin' only a couple o' years ago that there wasn't a single service man of our forces engaged in fighting anywhere in th' world. It wasn't long before they were in active duty. Would that our boys an' girls could be home for Christmas. Our hearts go out t' all who find themselves deprived o' their homes, through accident or other means. Seems like at this time o' year no one should be in trouble, but fate deems it otherwise. Our thoughts are wi' th' childern all o'er th' world. Now th' mind turns t' th' festive feast an' preparations which may include th' time-old traditional goodies. One which this granny reottlls is me mother's good plum puddin', made accordin't' me mother's recipe from England. None can taste th" same 'less it's made wi' good beef kidney suet, an' me doubts that it may be obtained in these so modern days. Ye take Ingredients as follows: Chop six ounces o' real beef kidney suet, fine as corn- meal, adding a bit o' flour if suet seems sticky. It's best real cold. Add three cups stale bread crumbs, an' same of flour, six ounces each o' raisins an' currants. Sprinkle one teaspoon cinnamon an' half a nutmeg grated, four ounces sugar an' half an ounce o' candied citron, lemon an' orange peel. Then beat lightly three eggs, add a half pint o' milk. Me ol' recipe calls f'r a teaspoon o' salt, t' keep. Mix all together, lastly th' milk an' eggs, to which has been added half a glass o' brandy. Be sure t' mix well, then tie up in a bleached muslin piece, th' size o' each one desired, an' tie real tight so water can't get In while boilin'. Have a large kettle a boilin' an' drop th' puddin's in an' boil six hours. Those not used may be dried by hangin' in' th' attic, wi' a paper over t' keep dust off. To use later, just put in a pot o' boilin' water an' boil an hour or so. Serve by pourin' brandy o'er, after removin' from bag, an' light it at table. Sauce is made wi' brown sugar a cup, half a teaspoon o' nutmeg grated, an' about half a cup o' hot water, an' tablespoon o' butter, cook until rather thick, add some good brandy and spoon o'er each servin. Happy eatin' an' a Merry Christmas t' one an' all. Grandma Radtke Save $50! DOWN/FEATHER COATS. She'll brave the cold weather in style in a hooded poly quilt. Hurry in while they last. Woodfield, Yorktown Safety hints: Jump starting a car engine Jump starting an engine in cold weather can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing or fail to take the necessary safety precautions. Batteries produce explosive gases, so keep sparks and flames away from bat teries at all times. Protect your eyes and do not lean over the ba'teries when jump starting an engine. The booster battery and the battery in the vehicle being started must have the same voltage rating (6, 12 etc.). Position the vehicle with the booster battery adjacent to the stalled vehicle so the booster cables can be connected easily to the batteries in both vehicles. But do not let the vehicles touch each other, or a ground connection could be established that could cause sparking. Turn off all electrical loads on both vehicles. Set the parking brakes and place automatic transmissions in "parte" and manual transmissions in "neutral". Be sure the vent caps are tight and level on both batteries. Place a damp cloth over the vent caps of each battery, clear of fan blade, belts and other moving parts. Following is the proper sequence for connecting booster cables: 1. Connect the positive ( + ) cable to the positive post of the discharged battery. 2. Connect the other end of this cable to the positive post of the booster battery. 3. Connect the negative (-) cable to the negative post of the booster battery. 4. Make the final connection on the engine block of the stalled vehicle away from the battery and stand back. 5. Start the vehicle with the booster battery and let the engine idle a few minutes. Then start the engine in the vehicle with the discharged battery. 6. Remove the cables in the reverse order of the connection. RECYCLE!
