Mail progress followed through the years SECTION 2 - PAGE IS • PLAINDEALEP. - WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 14. 1W3 The following article, Delivering the Mail, was written by Sissy Howe, a student at Harrison School, Wonder Lake. It was published in the ^December issue of Illinois History magazine, a publication for teens sponsored by the Illinois State Historical Library in cooperation with the Illinois State Historical Soeiety. The theme for the December issue is "Communications in Illinois". "In the early 1900's the mailmen who served the nor thern Illinois area were con sidered very prompt and ac curate in their rdbnds by the people they served. A tradition of service was started and remains successfully in operation today because of the strong sense of commitment which is shared equally by the employees and management of the United States Postal Ser vice. "Since most of northern Illinois was rural farming country in the 1920's and 1930's, mail delivery was not an easy process. The mail had to be delivered in any type of weather. The pay of almost all mailmen who served the rural routes was based on the length of the route. There were also routes that had small private carriers under contract to supplement the major truck deliveries of the postal service. Mail was usually delivered twice a week; in the winter the rural mailmen delivered once every two weeks. "Over the years the number of carriers who have delivered mail on both rural and town routes has totalled into the thousands. Jim Tappan, a retired McHenry County mailman, is typical of the earners who serviced a town's postal needs. He worked 38 years of his adult life for the postal service in Woodstock, and out of that time he missed seven weeks from his route because of illness. Tappan said that he had a very strict schedule. He remembered that you could set your watch by the arrival of the mailman. "Carriers like Jim Tappan represent the employees of the postal system. Mrs. Lorraine Murphy, the postmaster of Wonder Lake, Illinois, represents the management side of the mail delivery process. Mrs. Murphy started working for the United States Postal Service in 1957. She began as a part-time employee. She liked the job so she stayed with it. In 1974, she became Wonder Lake's postmaster. "Mrs. Murphy is in charge of seeing that the employees do their jobs. This means over seeing everything from the postal windows for customer service to the routes for rural delivery. She is also in charge of checking delivery and work schedules anq: watching the station's finances. Considerable supervision is needed for the five routes that make up the USED CAR SPECIAL LET ZIEBART HELP YOU! In the post office building in Wpnder Lake there are 319 postal boxes with more scheduled to be added this year. "By the combined efforts of workers and managers the mail deliveries in McHenry County have been excellent. Praise for delivery has come from many sources. Because of the good service the Woodstock Daily Sentinel is in the mailboxes at Harvard, 25 miles away, the same day that it is printed in Woodstock. "The successful operation of the post office as a means of communication depends on the completion of all the mail handling duties by all of the workers. With thousands of pieces of mail in circulation hourly, the postal service has had a traditionally difficult, yet good record in completing this government service. Employees like Jim Tappan and super visors like Lorraine Murphy have combined their talents to fulfill the historic motto of the post office to deliver the mail in rain or shine, sleet or snow." g e n e News Ask zoning change for construction A petition has been filed for hearing before the McHenry County Zoning Board of Appeals by William Dippe for a variation of the McHenry County zoning ordinance's "R-l" Residential District to permit construction yof an addition to the northwest ^orner of the subject premises. \The property is located at 2001 N6rth Wood lawn Park Avenue in McHenry Township and consists of approximately 10,900 square feet.
