Record low/temperatures recorded; in county SECTION t • PAGE » - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. DECF.MBFF 21. 1M3 By Cliff WaQ^nd^urt Begalka Shaw Free Press News Media Cold weather swept across Illinois and the Midwest during the weekend, leaving record lows in its wake. The tem perature at the county cour thouse was 15 degrees below zero' at 5:50 a.m. Monday. The temperature at 8 p.m. Sunday at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago was minus 10 Fahrenheit, one degree below the record set in 1844. In Bloomington, 111., the mercury dropped to minus 9, which tied the record mark. In nearby Peoria, the mercury dropped to minus 10, just one degree off the record. Hie National Weather Service in Rockford reported that the minus 17 reading set a new record low. Woodstock was a nippy minus 22 at 6 a.m. Monday morning. • •• r Most people who ventured out experienced little more trouble than slippery roads and cars that failed to start. A few McHenry school buses experienced some difficulty starting and had to be jumped as the temperature dipped early Monday. However, except for those traveling the longest routes, students were in the classroom on time. At Johnsburg, it was a dif ferent story. Problems starting buses prompted the ad ministration to cancel classes so that children would not need to wait in the extreme cold for their arrival. Trooper Steve Rosene of the Illinois State Police warned motorists to take precautions. He recommended people throw extra gloves, boots, a coat and shovel in their .car. "We all have these things but neglect to put them in our car," Rosene said. "We have faith that our old jalopy is going to start." Rosene also suggested motorists bring a candle and matches. It will emit enough heat to keep warm without creating hazardous fumes. Avoid heating devices that use charcoal, he said. Carry a blanket in the passenger area where it will already be warm in an emergency, Rosene said;. Other items recommended by the American Automobile Association-Chicago Motor Club include a small flashlight with extra batteries, a bright piece of cloth that can be tied to the car antenna and a large coffee can. Fill the can with non-perishable, high-energy foods. The McHenry County Housing Authority is offering financial assistance to help the needy pay energy bills. The Illinois Home Energy Assistance Program began accepting applications Dec. 1 and will continue to do so until the $258,000 the MCHA received is exhausted. Director Diane Kelly said 350 ap plications have been received thus far and about $20,000 has been allocated. Cases where service has been stopped are given top priority. These people may receive up to $750. Eligible recipients must have a 90-day income not exceeding $1,519 (one person), $2,044 (two people), $2,439 (four people), $3,276 (five people), $3,582 (six people). Applicants must bring proof of their income and current fuel bill. Kelly said check stubs from work or unemployment or a copy of a Social Security check will suffice. Renters must bring the landlord's name and address. Special provisions, such as home visits, will be made for the elderly or disabled. "There are a lot of people that need it, hut they don't realize it until it gets this cold/" MCHA staffer Rita Boretsld said. ^ Commonwealth Edison's "Vote for Generosity" program recently wound up on Dec. 2. When customers checked a special box on their bills, Com Ed donated $1 to help needy people pay fuel costs. Company spokesman Cindy Longest said the balance is $530,000 to date, with more processing required. Jim Jones, Com Ed construction supervisor, sporadic power outages oc curred throughout the area . Sunday night. The extreme ^coBpulls wires taut, causing them to snap, Jones said. John Shay, director of the i McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, said not to stay outside for prolonged periods dining the bitter cold. If you do go out, Shay said dressing in layers offers the best protection, as does wearing a hat, since the majority of heat the body loses is through the head. If fingers or toes show signs of frostbite, do not rub them with snow or run hot water over them, Shay said. Allow them to warm at room tem perature, he noted. Shay said to exercise caution . with kerosene heaters and to make sure of the proper type of kerosene for the unit. Cold weather also affects family pets, according to County Veterinarian Dr. J.V. Johnson. Short-haired dogs do not fare well in cold weather and they and cats should remain inside as much as possible, he said. Larger, long-haired dogs, such as huskies, he noted, do better in cold weather, but people should make sure they have a place H^ere they can shelter them selves from the wind and put their food in a place where it will not freeze. general mmm y w i i w i u i News Family awakened by pet dog, escape from" house fire By Angela Burden Shaw Free Press News Media Occupants of a rucal Wood stock home were awaxened by a barking dog to find their residence burning Saturday night.
