The 7:30 p.m. service will also be. a candlelight service with scripture and a message by the Dr. Eric J. Snyder. Christmas Day services will be held at the usual times of 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Once again, familiar Christmas carols will be sung and the message will be delivered by Dr. Snyder. r Unity Church plans candlelight service? Unity Church of Crystal Lake is presenting a candlelight service Thursday, Dec. 22, at 7:30 p.m. In this special service, offered by Rev. Rudy Leidig, all are invited to experience and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas through prayerful meditation, music of the season beautifully performed by Douglas Richmond, and a candlelighting ceremony. Unity is a non-denominational Christian church and warmly welcomes people of all belief systems. It is located at 3 Chalet Drive in Crystal Lake near the intersection of U.S. Rtes. 14 and 31. Candlelight communion services will be held at Shepherd Of the Hills Lutheran Church, 404 North Green St., McHenry, at 7:30 and 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. The handbell choir, under the direction of Dawn Labuy, and the senior choir, under the direction \ of Rosemary Schneider, will provide special music for the sevices. The handbell choir will present 80 minuts of handbell music from t 10:30 to 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Appearing as a soloist at both Christmas Eve services will be Walter Johnson singing "0 Holy Night". Pastor Roger Schneider will speak on the theme "God gave the perfect gift!" The Christ mas Eve communion services wil conclude with the sanctuary in total darkness except for candles while the congregation sings "Silent Night, Holy Night." A Christmas Day Festival Serve will be held on Chrisb&afc morning, Dec. 25, at ^0:80 a.m. A handbell solo by Dawn Lafiuy will provide special music for this service. The sanctuary has been adorned with many poinsettia plants to add beauty and dignity to the worship at mosphere. As part of the Christmas celebration in the parish, the congregation provided Christmas gifts for 80 inner city children in the Cabrini Green area of Chicago through Holy Family Luthern Church ministering in that urea. ' 1 The congregation has assisted approximately 20 families in the McHenry area with food and life's needs throughout the year. This same spirit of concern is being shown this Christmas by the congregation providing Christmas baskets and gifts for needy families in the area. Rabbi Greenfield serves McHenry County Reopen St. Peter's school in Volo After being closed for 22 years, St. Peter's School in Volo reopened Sunday, Dec. 18. A 10 o'clock Mass was offered for the late Father Charles Heaney, former pastor, followed by a reception in the school. Each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. there will be a Bible study and prayer meeting in the school. It was while he was serving the Elgin synagogue that he became acquainted with some people from McHenry County, which led to his becoming the rabbi here. While Rabbi Greenfield of ficially is retired from his post, he has been commuting here from his Elgin home, which he shares with his wife of 25 years^ Suzanne. The couple has two sons and two daughters. The McHenry County Jewish Congregation has been in existence for about five years, and about two years ago the group purchased the old Ridgefield School in Ridgefield. . Rabbi Greenfield comes to conduct services in Ridgefield on Friday evening and Saturday mdrning, the Jewish Sabbath. In addition, on Sunday morning he conducts adult education studies at the synagogue, where Sunday also held. ition to the weekend services, the congregation, comprised of about 125 families, also holds Bible studies and other activities. Two recent additions to those activities include programs for youth and adults. The youth group is named MEER, in honor of Golda Meir, the former prime minister of Israel, and is for boys and girls ages 12-17. The purpose of the group is to encourage par ticipation in religious, com munity and social activities. A Hebrew class is conducted for adults to improve their speaking and reading skills. "The congregation has been growing," Greenfield said, "and it's going to continue to grow and strengthen."
