U- Selection of wildlife bird feed is important SECTION 2-PAGE II - PLAINDEALER . WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER U. It83 All bird seeds are not alike. Select seed that will be at tractive to birds, not just the seed that is- the most inex pensive ai>ti easiest to obtain, says Dr.; Philip L. Nixon, University of Illinois Area Extension Adviser in En tomology. > Most wild bird mixes contain millet, sunflower, cracked corn, and milo. A good mix should ' contain mainly white millet with some red millet also being ac ceptable. Oil sunflower seed is eaten by more kinds of birds than is the striped seed. Milo is not attractive to most birds, and mixes that' contain large amounts of it should be avoided. A good wild bird mix should attract goldfinches, purple finches, juncos <snowbirds), cardinals, nuthatches, chickadees, grosbeaks, blue jays, mourning doves, and native sparrows, such as song, tree, white-crowned, and white- throated sparrows. Although safflower Is at tractive to some birds, they tend to prefer seeds included in the wild mixes. Thistle is expensive, but very attractive to finches, including goldfinches, purple finches, pine siskins, red polls, and house finches. Seeds included in the mix can be offered separately in order Uf attract specific types of birds. Seeds offered separately also reduce waste, since birds tend to push seed out of the feeder that is not attractive to them while trying to find their favorite If you decide to feed birds during the winter, make sure that you can do so for the entire winter. According to Carolyn Nixon, a local ornithologist, feeding birds probably In creases the number of birds that are able to survive the winter, but feeding for part of the winter may result in the death of birds that have come to depend upon you for a source of food. -- --general News Oldest female veteran 102 years Easter Seals achieves record service year The National Easter Seal Society achieved the biggest service year in its history in fiscal 1962, the latest year for which nationwide combined figures are available. In its annual report just released the Society said 750,315 clients received rehabilitation and other services through its nationwide network of facilities and programs, an increase of more than 11,000 individuals over tlje previous year. Program expenses, including patient and community ser vices, reached an all-time high of $111.6 million, a 5.4 percent increase over 1981. "Despite a difficult economy, total support and revenue was up nearly 5 percent amounting to $152.7 million, compared to $145.6 million in 1981," John Garrison, executive director of the Society said. "The public's growing sen sitivity to the needs of people with disabilities and Easter Seals' own public awareness efforts were contributing factors in the Society's financial growth in fiscal 1982," Garrison added.
