<r* V r̂ r Tones Music strikes the last chord PACE I • PLAINDEALER - WEDNE8DAY, DECEMBER 21. IM3 On Saturday, Dec. 24, after almost 20 consecutive years of - operation, Tones Music will strike the last chord and close its retail business operation. Under the same ownership and at the same location since March of 1964, Tones provided area residents with a varied assort ment of musical and home entertainment products. When Ron Bykowski graduated from Marian Central Catholic High School in 1963, his ambition was to own a music store and play trumpet in a dance band. Less then one year • from graduation he opened the doors to Tones Musical En terprises. Tones started as a small entertainment booking agency / and sound recording service providing bands and other musical entertainment for weddings, parties etc. The owner recalls that Tones was one of the first agencies in northern Illinois licensed by the American Federation. Of Musicians as a booking agency. In a short time it was apparent that the McHenry area needed a full line music store and Tones filled that need. Many local musicians took their first lessons there and some have gone on to full time professional careers. « In 1968 Tones expanded by opening a second store in Carpentersville. During the height of the CB radio craze, a wholesale mail order division was formed which >lied dealers all over the rest with quality electronic goods. As a pioneer in the in troduction and sale of many new electronic products Bykowski, throughout the past years, has been quoted in and consulted by nationaHfade publications and consumer groups. In 1976 "Katrick", the cat, joined the staff at Tones as store mascot and immediately became a hit with customers. "Katrick" was featured in Tones ads and in TV com mercials. Early this year, Bykowski decided to retire from the retail business and devote full time to other business ventures. He is currently president broker of Century 21 Care Real Estate Inc., president of Trey Cor poration, a real estate development firm, and general partner of various real estate investment partnerships in cluding the development of "Mill Pond Court" the former Jewel-Osco building on Elm Street. Throughout the past 20 years he has been active in many civic, fraternal and professional organizations. He is a member of the McHenry American Legion Post 491, the McHenry Chamber of Commerce, McHenry Knights of Columbus, Polish Legion of American Veterans, Greater Elgin Federation of Musicians Local 48 and the McHenry Rotary Club.
