My hesitancy is fear of repetition. But, let's give it a shot. by Earl Walsh CAROL AT HOME--McHenry Junior Women's Civic Group sponsored an afternoon of caroling at Royal Terrace on Wednesday, Dec 14th. We go through the same preparation and follow most of the same patterns of other years. -- And, nobody has ever found a good substitute for the greeting of "Merry Christmas". There were joys in seeing our own children and grandchildren open their eyes at sight and thoughts of Santa Claus. But, somehow my thoughts always drift back to my own childhood days. If I repeat, please bear with me. Let the spirit of Christmas prevail. My parents didn't open the front parlor very often during the winter months. But, the fireplace was in that room and how else could Santa Claus visit us. As usual, we got our pa jum pers on behind the hard coal stove and scooted through the cold hallway up to bed. The bedrooms were a little warmer than the outdoors, but flanel sheets helped. So did the soap stones Mom heqted anti put at our feet. Santa brought the tree and decorated it after we were asleep. Strings of popcorn and cranberries made beautiful decorations. We didn't have fancy Stockings to hang from the mantel-piece. Mom's stockings were big. So it was a good trick if you could get one of those numbers. An orange in the toe, then hard candy was the treat. If that candy got warm, it stuck to the sock. Fuzzy! SPEND YOUR NEW YEAR IN THE COUNTRY We were awake early on Christmas morning. Couldn't wait to run down the stairs so slid down the bannister. As the day wore on, our father had a booming fire in the fireplace, flames dancing crazily. Transportation was limited so we walked a mile across town to the old St. Patrick's Church which stood in all its vine- covered beauty facing Court Street, north of Washington Street. We were dressed to stand the chill of winter. Fleece-lined long underwear, stocking caps, wool mittens (knit by our mother or grandmother), and buckle boots. That was before zippers. Of course, Mom's big fur muff was standard equipment. I spent one Christmas in a hospital connected with the Mayo Clinic. They served a wonderful meal with beautiful settings. (Never mind that I couldn't do justice to that meal). Carolers roamed through the hospital halls and kindness abounded. Can't remember, but they may have given a fellow an extra pill to kill the pain. Dear Santa, you old Ho-Ho-Ho rascal, please do your best to make everybody happy at this Blessed Season. HERE IS A LIST: Bring whatever is needed to make.lhe White Sox champions of the wbrl^Hn 1984. V Peace on eprth. Good sense ioworld leaders so they can settle differences without killing people. Fairness and justice. A cure for baldness. Good health and less pain for all people. Comfort to John Busscher. He isn't Used to losing bets to me. Some Irish songs for Arnold Rauen. Make people close their traps when they can't say something good about others. Well, Santa, I'm running out of thoughts and nearing a deadline so from here oh you are on your own. Do your best to bring the true spirit of Christmas to all. I don't need a pair of socks this year. Give them to some fellow whose feet are cold. It's a big order but please try to bring love, peace and j^Merry Christmas to all. SPECIAL RITE The Fox Valley Christian Reformed Church, meeting at North Elementary School, 500 Woodstock Street, in Crystal Lake, will be having a special service of Scripture readings and Christmas carols at 6 p.m. Saturday, Christmas Eve.
