Michael Zegarski, a senior at Marian Central Catholic High School, recently received a first place rating as a vocal soloist in competition sponsored by the Illinois State Association of Music Teachers. This honor is only one of many Mike has received while in high school. Mike has also taken part in the Barrington Park District Music competition and received a first place-superior rating in the area of vocal music. In February, at the University of Cincinnati, he will compete in the divisional High School Vocal competition. The winner of this event will represent the Midwestern portion of the United States in national competition. Mike was a participant in the Northwestern University High School Summer Music Institute last summer. He received a $300 scholarship to attend this in stitute from the university. Mike feels "this was a very valuable experience for any student looking toward a career in music." Mike studies voice with Dr. Marie Ann Vos of Crystal Lake. He is also a member of the Marian Central Catholic High School chorus and swing choir, where Ms. Chris Cord is his teacher-director. While at Marian Central, Mike has participated in many theatrical and musical events. Mike is the son of Mrs. and Mrs. Ronald Zegarski of Crystal Lake. He hopes to study music- theater in college. Presently, Mike is awaiting results of the A.R.T.S. competition which, if a student wins, would result in an open audition and interview at a university in Florida, with the possibility of a scholarship up to $5,000. For this competition, he produced a 28-minute tape of classical songs and songs in many languages. Joins college radio station staff Cara K.
