The government plans to drop the price of a single ride from 1,20 pesos to one peso, while maintaining five-riae tickets at five pesos each. "itae is no other system in the world as cheap as ours," said Metro spokesman Jose Conde Mejia in an interview with The Associated Press. The reason for the single ride, price decrease is that Mexico plans to phase out the nation's 20-centavo coins, along with 10- and 50-centavo coins. Inflation has made the coins almost worthless. In terms of U.S. money, the cost of a subway ride here will drop from .80 of a penny to .67 of a penny. ; / Guillermo Cosio Vidaurri, director of Mexico City's Collec tive Transportation System, said the reduction would take effect when the "coins are officially ited. Jo one now knows for certain when that will be. The Metro is indeed something df an economic curiosity, selling less-than-a-penny tickets in an age of megabucks and reducing fares during a period of hyperinflation. Conde Mejia said Mexico's theap ride is a source of pride for eliminat No (MM Mexicans. Other countries that charge very little for a subway ride are • Budapest where a fare is a lit tle more than two cents, Peking, where it is about a nickel, ana Moscow, where it is about six cents, according to figures sup-* pUed by the transit spokesman. Subway fares in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago and London range from 75 cents to roughly a dollar. In case anyone iutpdering) what fiscal trickernnakes to maintain a sub-penny subway fare, the answer is: huge govern ment subsidies. The Metro this vear is ex pected to have a deficit of about $80 million, a shortfall that will be picked up by the government, said the transit spokesman. The government is willing to spend so much on the subway because it wants to keep it within the reach of most city residents, many of whom are very poor. Although often hot ana over crowded, the Metro functions well and transports an estimated 3.5 million people daily over 51 miles of the city. It first went in to service in 1909. , . Most Mexiciiu buy their Metro tickets in groups of five, at a total cost of five pesos, but about 400,000 people a day buy single tickets at 1.20 pesos apiece. When Mexico's 10 and 20 cen- tavo coins eventually., are eliminated, the Metro at mat will simply drop the price of a single ticket by 20 centavos, the transit spokesman said. Later the Metro may eliminate stagMicket sales altogether. \ Classified Advertising Produces Results!! W on Rte 31 just north ot 176 (015)455-4330 SERVINC McHENRY COUNTY SINCE 1966 ' ^> Face it.
