\ • •4 PAGE 21 - PIAINDEALER -FRIDAY, JANUAfoV 6, 1984 Jacobs only FVC team with holiday title imp The Jacobs Golden Eagles were the only Fox Valley team to capture a holiday championship this past week The Eagles of Ken Slimko defeated Marian Central in the Northern Illinois Classic. Woodstock captured second place at Wheeling, Dundee-Crown lost a pair at Elgin, South and Central didn't fare too well, and the Warriors did defeat Downers Grove North before bowing to the Blue Streaks. In the Streak game the Warriors hit ^ ice spell in the third period, scoring only three points tO/the Streaks 19 to put them out of the ball game. In the Downers r've North game, the Warriors looked tpressive in the 69-41 victory. Tonight, Gary Collins brings his Gators to Buckner Gym and tomorrow night tile Warriors travel to Fremd to meet Moe Tharp's crew. ••• Let's make plans to welcome Paul Morenz and his Deerfield Warriors next Saturaay night. The former Warrior is coming back home with a team to piay his alma mater. What would be more fitting, than to have a large crowd on hand to greet Paul, and root our Warriors on to victory over the prodigal son. • •• Pat Wirtz's Lady Warriors won over Round Lake, and then dropped a heartbreaker to Jacobs in the Dundee- Crown tourney. The Lady Warriors finished the tourney with a loss to Warren. v Conference play starts this week for On the Sideline4 Dick Rabbitt the Eady Warriors and we are hoping they get on the winning track. ••• Marty Sobczak's Rassling Warriors didn't fare too well at the Rockford- Boylan Invitational. The Warriors finished 11th in the meet. • •• Next week the state ratings for basketball will be out. It will be in teresting to see how the teams rank. Evanston, Thorton of Harvey, Peoria Manuel, Westinghouse of Chicago are some of the top teams in the state at the present time. But with conference play getting under way, a lot of changes could take place in the coming weeks. • •• The IHSA has come up with several changes for next year. The football season will open the Friday before Labor Day. Most teams are ready for a game by this time anyway, but it lets the door open lor an expansion of the state playoffs. The principals are expected to vote on expansion of the playoffs to 32 teams in each of the six classes. This will give a lot of conference runnerups a chance at the state title, along with a few more independents. The other change is students par ticipating in athletics must pass 20 hours of class work per week, instead of the present 15 hours. This may make it tough on the marginal student. If the student is taking only four classes he better pass them all or sit on the sidelines. This brings up a question -- will the marginal student be forced to take five classes? ••• Going down memory lane this week, we go back to the 1965-66 season when our Warriors pulled the upset of the year. The Warriors behind behind Paul Kilday and Rich Soda defeated the state ranked North Chicago Warhawks 63-55. It was the Warhawkf only North Suburban loss of TKe~~~year. The Warhawks later went to the super- sectional in Evanston. It was Coach Glen Anderson's biggest win as a Warrior coach. - McHenry 63 North Chicago 55 McHenry: Kilday 7-2-2 16, Lossman 1- 0-1 2, Reinboldt 1-1-4 3„ Schmike 4-5-4, Soda 5-6-116, Evans 3-7-3 13, Carstens 0- 0-1 0, totals 21-21-16 63. She wants to run - not in the 10,000-meter race in Los Angeles - but with the Qlympic torch. But to realize this dream, Simes needs to raise $3,000, the price tag for carrying the torch. money is to be raised by Jan. 15 and donated to the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee or the Boys Club of America. The torch will be flown to New York City from Greece. From New York, the torch will be carried by a series of runners to the Los Angeles Coliseum to officially open the quadrennial summer games. Simes said 12,000 runners from all 50 states will run a kilometer each to Los Angeles. It is expected to take about 80^ days to cross the country, from May 8 to July 28. An account has been opened at the Hebron State Bank to handle the tax-deductible donations. To donate, interested persons may call Alden-Hebron High School at 648-2442. If the $3,000 is not raised, the money will be returned to the donors, Simes said. * , Simes will carry the torch somewhere in the Chicago area sometime in early June. Torch bearers are scheduled on a first- come, first-served basis. ^ If she is^ble to^fjarticipate in the ceremony, sKe will be able to keep the torch she carries, which she will donate to the high school. Simes said if someone were to donate the entire $3,000, she would give the donor the torch. like magic t // cnaa IZ.MONTM CD I l h at tax time... and at retirement.
