Take steps to halt PAGE 5 -PLAINDEALER- FRIDAY JANUARY 6. 1984 i • ? r i , - ~ By., Yvonne Beer, executive vice- president, McHenry County Board of Realtors Burglary is big business! Burglary-prevention measures are important to keep in mind especially if you plan to visit •friends or relatives. Unoccupied homes are a prime target, particularly placies where residents have advertised that they are away. It's important that you give your home an occupied look 'when you're not there, even if it's only for^ matter of hours. Newspapers and circulars piled at your front door are obvious clues that you're not home, as are letters and periodicals bulging from your mail box. Simply call the newspaper and* the post office to stop deliveries or ask a neighbor to collect them for you while you're away. r In this northern area, arrange to have your sidewalks and driveways shoveled free of snow. You even could have a neighbor park in your driveway to leave tire marks in the snow and walk to the front door to leave footprints. Common sense should prevail with the locking and latching of all windows and doors. If you don't have deadbolt locks, now is a good time to get them. They provide extra protection and are Innovations in communications ealtors ECORD LESTORREY Members of McHenry County College secretarial science instructor Sunnie Drake's In troduction to Word Processing ... class took a look at the technological innovations designed to meet changing communications needs when Les Torrey of Illinois Bell presented the talk "Technology of the '80s" at the College. An entertaining exploration of the future, the program explains how t}ie telephone network and computers may make your h6me or office a total com munications center. "Technology of the '80s" and other free talk programs from Illinois Bell can be scheduled for civic and community groups by calling 1-800-972-0442. relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Portable burglar alarms attached/to doors and windows often will scare off a potential thief. Lights left on all day and night or the absence of any light at night are sure signs of vacancy. Use automatic timers to turn on lights, or even televisions and radios. Timers are inexpensive and some varieties alter the on and off times to withinC-30 minutes of set times. Leave shades, blinds, and curtains in normal positions. Otherwise, it looks like you're not at home. In addition, drawn blinds act as a screen to hide the activities of a burglar in your house. Notify the police before you leave, especially if you expect to be gone for a noticeable length of time. It might be a good idea to place valuables in a safe deposit box and keep a list of appliance serial numbers. You must be able to identify stolen property if law enforcement officials recover it. Etch your Social Security number on' property that doesn't have othep such numbers. The McHenry County Board of Realtors suggests that while these hints cannot guarantee that you will not be victimized, it will reduce the likelihood. You'll enjoy your trip much more knowing your house looks oc cupied. here & * there in Business • Gen Tel boosts rates for area customers General Telephone of Illinois customers wilj see a $1.89 per month increase in local service rates effective since Jan. 1, as a result of a recent Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) order affecting all independent telephone companies and customers in the state. The Dec. 21 ICC order also calls for a subsequent/increase of 72 cents to local s^vice rates on July 1, 1984. » Each two-party customer will pay one-half $1.89 and 72 cents i n c r e a s e s . F o u r - p a r t y customers will , each pay one- fourth the single-line increase. v These changes 'represent a shift in telephone company revenue sources not an increase in revenues, said Larry Henry, General Telephone of Illinois' state vice president - general manager. Youiig man's dream realized ---1 A1 Mrowka recently opened the Village Market grocery store at 3410 Thompson Road, Wonder Lake. He had owned and operated the original store ar 4405 E. Wonder Lake Road, Wonder Lake, for seven years. "When I was in high school, my dream was to own two stores," Mrowka said. Mrowka, 29, is a native of Wonder Lake. While attending McHenry High School he worked as a sales clerk for four years at the store, then returned two years later, in 1974 as a manager and butcher. He eventually bought the business. Mrowka has remodeled the formet Sunset Grocery to ac commodate a greater selection of merchandise. By Easter, he hopes to add meat and produce. "Then the stftre will be complete," he said. The store is a combination drug store and delicatessen.
