For Billy has just returned to the United States after taking part in the Tarawa struggle and, though not able to return to McHenry for the holidays, spent Christmas with his sister in San Diego. The Plaindealer received a most sincere letter from Mrs. Edward Doran, of McCullom Lake, who was writing for her son, Bob, who is now suffering from malaria fever in the jungles of New Guinea. He had written to his mother telling of receiving a membership card from the local American Legion commander, Paul Yanda. He asked his mother to express his thanks to the Plaindealer, to Mr. • Yanda and the entire Legion Post for their thoughtfulness. Mrs. Doran said that. Bob seemed to have cheered up considerably upon receipt of the messages. 25 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 8, 1958) Petitions were being cir­ culated on behalf of Michael Schaefer of Johnsburg for the office of regular supervisor pf McHenry Township and for James Althoff of McHenry for assistant supervisor. Charles "Chuck" Miller will conclude 12 years of service as township highway com- t missioner "when his term of office expires this spring. He is seeking reelection. In the city of McHenry, the terms of three aldermen will expire this year and the regular election will be held April 21. Charles D. Brown will be completing a four-year term of office in the third ward. In the first ward, William J. Bolger was elected for a two-year term to fill a vacancy. Robert C. Newkirk was elected to fill a vacancy. His term will also expire this year. It is expected that all three incumbents will be candidates for reelection. 10 YEARS AGO (Taken from the tiles of Jan. 4, 1974 > A McHenry youth was one of 19 from this district nominated as candidates to the service academies at West Point and Annapolis by Congressman John B. Anderson. A second McHenry man was designated as alter­ nate. Thomas Sweeney, 18, of Regner Road, was one of the three principal candidates nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Named as an alternate to the Naval Academy was Mark B. Koerber, 18, of Country Club Drive, McHenry. With congressional action for daylight saving time to go into effect to assist the energy crisis, , residents should remember to turn ahead their clocks one hour before retiring this Saturday night. The new time goes into effect Sunday, Jan. 6. Ask parent help in fight against teenage drinking Joining the effort of other school districts in the area, Richmond-Burton . Community High School is sending letters to parents, asking their par­ ticipation in/thes fight against alcohol abu^e. \ Letters include postcards which parents are asked to return after indicating their supporLftf the effort. The pur- posa^dfthe project is to foster ana develop a network of parents who will band together to discourage teenage drinking.
