She scored 15 points, while Sarah Prust scored eight. The first half was all McHenry as the Lady Warriors took a 26- 16 lead into halftime. Slowly but sure, Johnsburg cut the McHenry lead. The Skyhawks. outscored McHenry 10-4 in the third period and the Warriors only had a 30-28 lead after three quarters. "We couldn't buy a bucket in the first half." Fahey said. "We were taking good percentage shots I thought. I wasn't panicking at that point. "In the second half we used full court pressure and our shots started dropping. You have to make your shots for full court pressure to be effective." Wirtz blamed poor shooting and turnovers for the Warriors second half collapse. "We had .nlgiitygnf ehances." he said. "I told the girls the inability to hit free throws came back to haunt us at the end. We couldn't miss in the first half. "Unneeded turnovers when we wanted to slow the ball down didn't help. We threw the ball inside when we didn't need to." Swartzloff hit a jump shot to start the fourth quarter to tie the game at 30-30. McHenry, however, sparked by Mezzano's steal and layup, built its lead back up to 35-30. Two straight Johnsburg baskets by /Chris May and Hauck narrowed the McHenry lead to 38-36 with 1:35 left in the game. A scramble for a loose ball followed, with Mezzano receiving the foul and May given the chance at the free throw line. May hit on one to make the score 38-37. Hauck's winning basket followed. JOHNSBURG - The Marian Central girls' basketball team kept its conference record un- plemished ^defeating the Johnsburg Lady Skyhawks 41-31 last night. Despite the 10 point difference at the game's end, Marian did not have a clear-cut path through the contest. "Johnsburg made some mistakes which we took ad vantage of," said Hurricane Coach Don Penza. "However,, our turnovers allowed the Skyhawks to come back really well." The Hurricanes drew first blood by taking a 6-4 first quarter lead. But Skyhawk Coach Nancy Fahey encouraged the 'Hawks to increase their pressure and the 'Hawk in tensity led by Theresa Hauck with three buckets tied the game at 12-12 by half-time. "We've been pressing quite a bit," noted Skyhawk Coach Fahey. "Marian's Walsh is a good guard and our press second quarter was effective to stop her, but we didn't do enough of it." Little held back the Hurricanes third, quarter as Nancy Walsh and Kim Kouper each sunk fqur baskets to put Marian ahead 32-19. Marian did however miss numerous chances at the free throw stripe to runaway with the game. "Our free throw shooting left little to be desired," agreed Penza. "We made only 7 of 18 shots and we should be shooting 75 percent. We could have really built a comfortable lead, but when you miss adding those extra points you also loose that psychological edge." The missed free throws were not a contributing factor to the Skyhawks problems.^ The 'Hawks sank 9 of 13 free throws allowinng the Skyhawks to trim the Hurricane advantage and remain on Marian's heels throughout the final quarter. "We have no excuses for our loss," explained Fahey. "There was no lack of effort, but we've played three very close games in five days and tonight we didn't execute the little things. We've played come back ball a lot this year and you can't play like that all the time." The Johnsburg Skyhawks saw their conference record drop to 0-3 and their overall record to 3- 4. * The Lady Hurricanes ex tended their perfect conference record to 3-0 and will have a brief break before they take on Marengo next Tuesday at home.
