PAGE 19 PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1984 GATORS STALL BACKFIRES continued from page 20 quarter, but was pulled out right away by Ludwig. Peterson returned with a minute left in the contest and scored only his third and fourth point of the game on two free throws with 40 seconds left. One of the keys of the game waS the play of Ross Vehring. the 6-foot-^ senipr pulled down veral key rebounds for the arriors in the absence of Peterson. "This puts us right back into the title race. Our kids are first starting to play basketball," said Ludwig on his teams inexperience to start the season, Ludwig was happy with the play of the entire team in the second half, calling the win a team effort. "Craig Hill hit two, three key shots and Pat Dunne did a good job." Dunne ended up the Warrior's top scorer with 11 points, while Hill scored eight and Freund 10. The game< started like the away witji the contest. Jump shots by kill, Dunne, Freund and a layin by Corey Scott gave McHenry a 10-2 first quarter lead. But South would outscore McHenry 12-2 the rest of the quarter to take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter. Freund's iump shot tied the contest at 18-18, but two free throws by Steve Dayton and a basket by Bill Buckels gave South a four-point lead. The Gators built up *an eight point leade on a jump shot by Kardys. Vehring hit two free throws to cut it back to six, but Paul Prentice's side-shot with four Ko half put th§^- lead back to eight. Prentice's basket would be South's last point scored until 50 seconds into the fourth quarter. In that span, McHenry would take a 36-32 lead. "In the first quarter we played alright, but in the second quarter we started to take some bad shots. The second quarter has been a had quarter for us," Ludwig said. Dayton's turnaround jumper at 7:10 in the fourth quarter broke the dry spell for South. But McHenry regained the hot-hand shooting from the first quarter, sparked by Dave Toussaint. The Oif Hie b-IOOl-I senior came bench to score six buckets on jump shots. Mike Frothingham had cut the South deficit to 42-40, but Toussaint's basket with 1:50 gave McHenry a four-point lead. South, however, would only score one more basket, as time ran out on the Gators. Missed shots help Marian slip by Grayslake s^c fin •w®" \irV» By Brian Spears Shaw-Free Press Service GRAYSLAKE - Grayslake's Rams missed two long jump shots and a last- >cond desperation shot in the fjtaal ten seconds of the game, which allowed Marian Central to slip away with a 55-54 Northwest Suburban Conference win in the Rams' gym Friday night. "We were a little lucky," Marian Central Coach Hans Rokus said. "Like Andy (Hartlieb) said, 'a win is a win.' " The Hurricanes, who led 33-30 going into the final period, kept the Rams on the ropes in the decisive final quarter by sinking a string of 13 consecutive free throws. Andy Hartlieb and Dan Lalor each made four-of-four in the quarter, while Chuck Hartlieb made five straight to help keep the 'Canes on top. MC held a five point lead, 53- 48, with just 1:33 showing on the clock, but Grayslake pulled within a point, 53-52, on two long jump shots by guards Todd Parola and Jeff Troemel with less than a minute to play. With 48 seconds remaining, Chuck Hartlieb hit his team's 13th straight free throw for a £4- 52 advantage, but the number 13 turned out to by unlucky, as he missed the secofid free throw to end the string. Grayslake missed a jumper with :34 left and I^artlieb hit another free throw at the :32 mark for a 55-52 score. But then, Marian was called for a loose- ball foul, and Rams senior Parola hit a pair of free throws to trail by only one. With just 23 seconds left in the game, Rokus knew Grayslake had to foul. He said that he planned to get the ball inbounds to one of the Hartlieb brothers - his two best free throw shooters. The Rams did end up fouling Chuck Hartlieb, but Marian's strategy failed, as he missed the bonus opportunity. That gave the Rams a chance to win the game in the last seconds, - but Troemel, Bryan Garrity, and Bryan Olson all missed long jump shots that could have won the game. - "We let them off the hook a little at the end," Rokus said. "We had a turnover and some fouls away from the basket and missed a couple of one-and- one's, but we'll take the win." The Hurricanes have now won six of their last seven contests for a 6-3 overall record and are 2-2 in the NWSC. Grayslake's two senior guards, Parola and Troemel, came through with a combined total of 16 points in the last quarter to keep their team in the game. They were the only Rams in double figures - Parola led all scorers with 24 and Troemel added 13. "Those guards are good ballplayers, they complement each other well," Rokus said. "They (Grayslake) aren't a bad ballclub. They hung in there all the way. I figured it would go down to the wire." Both teams shot well from the charity line. The Rams hit 14-of- 19 while the Hurricanes made 17-of-24. The game started slowly in the first half, as each team had to work for every point. Grayslake held a slight 13-12 advantage after the first period, despite eight points by Andy Hartlieb. Marian won the second quarter, 10-9, to knot the contest at 22-22 at the half. The contest was tied nine different times in the middle two quarters, but the Hurricanes went on a 4-1 spurt to finsh the third quarter and take a 33-30 lead. Andy Hartlieb and Dan Lalor were the only two 'Canes in double figures as they tallied 19 and 14 points, respectively, to lead their team. Chuck Hartlieb, usually the 'Canes high scorer, was held to nine points, although he made seven-of-11 free throw attempts to help his team. ^ Johnsburg 2nd at Geneva, Marian 6th GENEVA -- Like a baseball manager juggling his batting lineup, Johnsburg coach Mike Roberts adjusted his wrestling lineup several weeks ago. His adjustment has ended' up iKt? best move he could make. Roberts juggled the bottom of his lineup, by switching places of his heavyweight and 185- pounder. John Grenman wrestled as Johnsburg's heavyweight at the beginning of the season, while Jim Bentz was at 185. But Bentz was having difficulty keeping his weight at 185^so Roberts decicfiecl to switch the two. The result^ have been good for the Skvh^wk team. Johnsburg kept up its tour nament success by placing second in the Geneva Invitatinal Saturday with 118 4 points. Valley Lutheran took the title with 191 points. Marian Central took sixth with 554. Mike Dijmell was Johnsburg's only champion, taking'the 155- pound title. John Grenman was second. Mark Wohnrade took the 105-pound championship for Marian Central, while Steve Stilling (138) and Tony Piwowarczyk (HWT) both finished second. "I'm real pleased with those two." said Roberts on Bentz and Grenman. "The move ended up super beneficial to the team. Bentz has been 7-1 since the switch. He's doing a wonderful job." Roberts was the most pleased with Dumelle. He defeated Tom let's' talk UP AND OVER -- McHenry I ay up as Steve Dayton is chance for a block. O'Shea of Hampshire 6-2 for the title.
