/ SECTION 2 - PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11. 1984 # Combatting problems on road in winter driving There have been a number of articles in newspapers and' magazines this fall about preparing your car for winter driving but not much about what to do if you should run into trouble once you're on the road.. After you've checked the battery, the brakes and the exhaust system, think next of what you would need in case of an emergency. First of all, every car should be equiped year-round with an emergency kit. This kit should include a flashlight with fresh batteries, flares and a first aid kit. Unless you have special training in the treatment of an injured person, your first aid kit need not contain supplies you don't know how to use. But it should contain gauze com presses to staunch the flow of blood, bandages of various sizes, aspirin and antibacterial salve or spray. However, do not give a stranger any medication - even aspirin. Some people are allergic to aspirin, iodine and-or antibiotics; so wait until a medically-trained person or team arrives on the scene of an accident, and let them deter mine the medication needed. If you are going to be driving ill upcli cuuliliy, you SiiOuIu also carry a winter storm kit in your car. This kit should contain blankets or sleeping bags, high calorie nonperishable food such as breakfast bars or chocolate, a knife, " ^hovel, windshield scraper, ^coffee can, candles and matched. A lighted candle in a coffee kan gives off con siderable warmth. If you are planning a long distance winter trip, study your maps and route numbers. Mark the expressway entrances and exits to avoid last minute con fusion. Check the latest weather information before you leave home and periodically on your car radio while enroute. Try to travel in convoy with other vehicles. And make sure your gas tank is full before entering open country, even for a short distance. Gefoff io ah eariy atari §olhi»iJ you have time to drive with the traffic and not against the clock. On clear roads, you should leave at least one car length between you and the car ahead for each ten miles of speed, but every experienced driver is aware that it can take longer to stop a car on ice and show. When driving during a winter storm,, reduce the posted speed limit by 10 miles an hour for each bad driving condition. For example, if the speed limit is 55 and it is snowing, slow to 45. If there is ice on the road, slow another 10 mph. If the adverse conditions come out to 0 mph, stay home! If your car breaks down, or if the roads become impassable, pull off to the side of the road. Never stop in a lane of traffic unless your car quits on you tui i ipldclyr TUTH Ou-bsife-fvsr flasher lights, and tie a white cloth to the radio antenna or door handle. Set out flares, but don't use a red, flashing light. If you do get stuck m a storm, stay in your car. Get out only to brush snow away from the exhaust oipe. So, open one window just a crack to avoid asphyxiation, do not run the engine any more than absolutely necessary - and stay awake. OUR SUPER WHI Continues Twin Summer fresh sheets. R*fl. 4.99.
