Several Illinois spokespersons recently testified before the US. Attorney General's Task Force on Family Violence in Detroit, Mich. Barbara Shaw, director of Illinos Coalition Against Domestic Violence, described the statewide effort in Illinois to serve victims of domestic violence and prevent future violence. Shaw highlighted the im plementation of the Illinois Domestic Violence Act and the effort in Illinois to work cooperatively with criminal Suicide survivors plan meetings The regular monthly meeting of S.O.S. or Survivors of Suicide will be held Thursday, Jan. 12, and Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. announces A its president, Irene Kinross. It will be held at the offices of Youth Service Bureau located at 4719 W. Elm Street in McHenry. Those who have lost a son, daughter, wife or husband through suicide are urged to attend. Noting that every five years, the death toll from domestic violence equals that of the American death toll in the Vietnam War, Shaw stated that "domestic violence is one of the most widespread and serious forms of crime in our country. It is not just a family or marital problem, it is criminal behavior which has largely been per petrated because the offender can get away with it." Shaw added that "national, state and local funding bases are urgently needed" to provide life- protecting services to battered women and their children. Judge Roy O. Gulley, director of Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, noted that the Illinois Domestic Violence Act provides judges with new, comprehensive legal remedies which address the criminal nature of domestic violence. Judge Gulley emphasized the critical role judges play in representing the law to in dividual abusers, and in providing leadership within the criminal justice system.
