Having a County College gives opportunities to many, young and old, who couldn't possibly further their education any &thex way. Time spent with Dennis Welter at East Campus some weeks ago left me with the assurance that much is being done to help students at all levels. <^My Uncle John, long gone from this earth, once told me his education took him through the fourth reader. In earlier days, boys on the farm had to stay out of school to work in the fields during spring and fall months. Some boys and girls in my day didn't have the opportunity to go to high school. If they got through eighth grade, 'twas said they graduated. Some of us who had the op portunity to go to high school found plenty to complain about. This note was given to a waitress when Arnold (St. Joseph) Rauen and I were having lunch: * "These two guys are a couple of sly characters. ---Just watch your step." -- DanJusten How could a couple of well- behaved young fellows get such a reputation? Hadn't seen Dick (The People's Choice) Rabbit in some time. In a brief meeting, he directed that we attend the high school basketball game next Saturday night. That is the night Coach Paul Morenz, former star athlete at MCHS, brings his team to his home town to meet Coach HuHwig's Warriors. ^ Watch the sports section for more details on the game. A little handicap has kept me from attending games, but will try to make this one Nancy Fike is starting now to plan a big sports day at the McHenry Historical Society next September. Anybody with old time^pic- tures or memories of earlier days can help make the day a big success. This will be for the entire county. We hope the McHenry- Johnsburg-Ringwood area will play a big part. Our mention of George Vogel last week brought chuckling memories to Vivian Bassett. When Vivian was a young girl, her folks came to these parts from Texas for a visit. I don't know if Vogels were relatives or shirttail relatives, but they were visited. Vivian wanted to visit the barn to see the race horses, but was warned about the language out there being "no place for a young girl". I had a fun visit with the Dan Creamers as they wheeled around a shopping center in their motor-carts. , Asking if they ever raced, Dan informed me that Helen's buggy was much too speedy for his cart. On a shopping tour, I always have * favorite spot to sit and wait. Enjoyed a visit with Otto Hertel, formerly of the Lake County Hertels, who now resides along Chapel Hill road OLD SAYINGS You can't bring happiness to yourself by bringing sadness to others. To expect loyalty, be loyal. Spread sunshine. It will shine back on you. He's the kind with two left feet. If you don't have wings, keep your feet on the ground. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. If you are going to wear the pants in the family, be sure they fit. Never give up. If the dog hadn't stopped, he would have caught the rabbit. Live and let live. Birds of a feather flock together. Smile and the world smiles with you. Snore and you sleep alone. Ms. Hobbet stated that Malone. a former McHenry resident, has in dicated his intention t,o devote fnore time to other business and personal interests in the com munity. His resignation will become effective Feb. 1. and Malone said he will pursue other business and personal interests. Current plans call for the county seniors' council center on Illinois Street in Crystal Lake to close sometime next month. Cutbacks in federal funding have left the center hard- pressed to cover rent on the building. Malone recently told the board of directors of the senior citizens' council that to be "fiscally responsible," the center would have to move by Feb. 17 at the latest. However, he aAvis#UJs nde officialr when they will vacate the building until after the Crystal Lake City Council completed its search for a temporary senior citizens' center to replace the county facility. In December, Councilman John Yerly, chairman of the city's seniors committee, an nounced that the Crystal Lake American Legion had agreed'to allow the use of its building on Woodstock Street as a tem porary seniors' center. Malone has served as executive director since March 1981. In that time, the council's mention program was established and a program was started to help transport seniors unable to drive, according to a written statement by the senior citizens' council. Also begun under Malone's leadership was the Social Service Case Coordination Unit, the statement said. The program involves the oversight of long-term health care for seniors and was begun in July.
