Sports City softball leagues face rule -changes By Barb Ansell Here we are in the middle of January with cold weather around us and snow on the ground. This hardly seeijis like the time to be talking about softball, but there have been several new changes involving leagues throughout McHenry so now is the time to face those changes before the season starts. The mens' and womens' softball leagues will see several changes for the coming season. Among the changes to be implemented will include changes in residency and scheduling of games, as by decision of the McHenry City Council. According Parks and Recreation Director Pete Merkel the city council felt the changes were needed. "There was concern among the city council members that the facilities were becoming overcrowded and that the city residents should have priority usage of the the area facilities." That concern prompted the new residency rules instituted for the softball leagues which play on city of McHenry facilities and will be in effect with, the 1984 season. The teams eligible to utilize city of McHenry facilities must fall into one of two categories. The first categpiy states that no teamf will be allowed to play on city of McHenry facilities unless they can meet a minimum of 60 percent of thei«< roster players residingN^jllhin the McHenry High School district boundaries. (For example, with a 20 person roster, the normal softball roster limit, a minimum of 12 players must reside within the established high school district boundaries.) The second category will include teams comprised of 80 percent of roster players residing within the cor porate limits of the city of McHenry. For all adult softball leagues sponsored by the city of McHenry department of Parks and Recreation which includes: the recreational men's 12-inch softball, the women's 12- inch softball and the youth 16-inch softball leagues; the registration will be set up as follows: The first week of registration for leagues administered by the Parks and Recreation department will be opened to teams that meet the minimum of 80 percent McHenry corporate city residents. Teams that can meet that 80 percent corporate city residency will be required to pay only league fees. The second week of registration will be open to teams that meet the minimum of 60 percent of McHenry High School district city residents. These teams will pay the league fees plus a Tax Equalization Fee (non-resident) of 75 dollars per team. All registration of Parks and Recreation ad ministered leagues will be filled on a first come first serve basis. He played basketball/ baseball and football for the Badgers between 1962- 66. Warrior game a flashback for Paul Morenz By Mike Lamb When the McHenry Warrior basketball team takes on Deerfield this Saturday, it will be just another non-conference1 contest for the Warrior players and coach Ken Ludwig. Even the Deerfield players will see nothing special about the 7:30 p.m. contest. One particular person on the Deerfield team, however, will be reacting to the occasion dif ferently. Deerfield coach Paul Morenz will be leading his team against his alma mater in front of old friends and relatives. He roamed the halls of McHenry High School and played sports for the Warriors in 1958 through 1962. Although it appears like a homecoming, it really Morenz has spent most of hisTOe in McHenry and currently resides in a house that is four blocks from McHenry's West Campus. "I have been out of school for 22 years now, but its still pretty exciting," said Morenz. "It's kind of a flashback for me and the coming back as a coach 'where I once played. It gives me a look at where I have been 25 years. Morenz has been remembered by many as one of the top athletes to ever pick up a basketball at McHenry. He led the Warriors in scoring his senior year with a 23.5 average. He scored a blistering 38 points against Crystal I,ake and tallied 32 against Barrington and 31 against Zion-Benton. When he was all done pleasing his hometown neighuors, he took his athletic act to the University of Wisconsin where he played basketball, football and baseball. Once a McHenry boy, Morenz will always be a McHenry boy. He lives in the same house where he grew up. The house next door used to be the residence of former McHenry coach Cliff Fulton.
