PAGE 19- PLAINDEALER- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 19K4 let's' talk ^ Sports RESCUE 50 --had 63 snowmobllers starting their engines as they prepare for the jannual event that STAFF PHOTO WAYNE GAYIORO began in Johnsburg with routes through Wonder Lake and Woodstock. 63 sledders take on Rescue 50 Marathon Plenty of snow on the ground and ideal tem- pertures led to no post ponements and perfect conditions as the ninth Rescue 50 snowmobile marathon was held right on schedule Sunday morning. The only drawbacks of the marathv>n were the number of snowmobilers and the money raised. A total of 63 sledders participated, which is up from last year's 37, but far less than the 87 two years ago." A year ago, poor snow conditions led to two postponements of the event and a low turnout of sled ders. Although no official money " figures were available, Jim Wright, committee chairman of the event reported funds raised were way below last year's total. "This was the best one we ever had. Everything was great. The ride itself was ideal," said Wright on the marathon and the con ditions. Wright had a pretty good idea for theJqw .amount of money raised. He blamed the fact the rescue squads are now state funded. "What a lot of people don't realize, the funds don't pay for jackets and other equipment," said Wright. Crime Stoppers, a citizen orgainization sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce which supports law en forcement and the prevention of crime in the McHenry area, is another of the beneficiary marathon. The sledders, led by the McHenry County Deputy Snow Patrol, left Raymonds Bowl in Johnsburg at 8:30 a.m. Stops were made at the \ Mill Inn in Wonder Lake and Timbers in Woodstock. The sledders returned to Raymonds at 3:40 p.m. Rescue squad vehicles were used to stop traffic at road crossings and help also came from the Sheriffs Department. PAUL MORENZ, DEERFIELD continued from page 20 inside. But, Deerfield would score the next eight points, with Sandgren scoring two of the baskets. McHenry took a timeout with 5:56 left in the first quarter. The timeout helped, as McHenry battled back and faced a 16-12 defecit at the end of one quarter Criag Hill's layin and Pat Dunne's basket after grabbing the rebound tied the game at 16. Corey Scott, who led the Warriors in scoring with 14 points, hit on a turnaround jumper to give McHenry the lead. Sandgren, however, continued to hurt McHenry, as he hit on a field goal apd was fouled by Hill. He missed the free throw, but Deerfield took back the lead, which they, would never lose. Sandgren hit on another jumper to give Deerfield a 22-18 lead. The half ended with Deerfield holding a 29-24 lead. Steve Nordmark and Todd Lanscioni hit on baskets to give Deerfield its biggest lead at 33- 24. Baskets by Scott, Scott Freund and Peterson did close the gap a little, while Deerfield went into the final period* WARRIOR GRAPPLERS continued from page 20 and is gaining respect from the other kids " Dan Mohnen. at heavyweight, ^picked up McHenry's only other win against the Chargers. It was kind of a revenge win for Mohnen lie had lost to Frank Fleming twice this season and he wanted to change fHat trend He won T> 4. "He lost twice to him. hut 1 told him the conference match is the most important," Sobczak said. "It's the criteria for seeding in the4 conference meet." Mohnen picked up two more wins over the weekend. He won on a forfeit against Joliet and pinned Rich Herra of Kaneland. The pin was Mohnen's 12th of the season and he leads the team in that category. He is only four pins away from the school record for pins in a season, set by Ed Hughes. Hunt is second on the team with nine. Another highlight in the double dual at Kaneland was the success of sophomore Dennis Gaines. Gaines pinned both of his opponents and is now currently 4-0 in varsity action. He pinned Matt Kinsaella of Joliet in 47 seconds and Roger Lauger of Kaneland in 1:01. All four of Gaines varsity wins have come on first period pins. Bob Sarabia picked up McHenry's only other pin of tfte weekend. He recorded a fall against Tim Callahan of Joliet in 3:42 at 132-pounds. McHENRY HAMMERS continued from page 20 surrounded by Charger players. However, it left a path for Dave Toussaint. Dunne, Scott and Ross Vehring to get into the scoring act and let the Warriors maintain their 10 point bulge. 39- 29. at intermission Hal ft i me talk v\as the Warriors shooting, 16-of-26, and if they could keep up the pace during the remainder of the game. Only the shooting of Mike Harris and Joe Dougherty of the Chargers kept it from being a route at this time. In the third period, the Warriors kept up their hot hand, with Peterson going five-for- five, and with help from Dunne, Scott and Freund. Helped by g^od defense, the Warriors increased their margin to 59-45 going into the final period.
