I 9H4 let s' talk ^ Sports Marian topples Rams, lose to Grant By Brian Spears Shaw-Free Press Service WOODSTOCK - Marian Central's version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde gave the Hurricanes a weekend split of their games as the 'Canes were defeated by Grant, 60-48, but rebounded Saturday to stop Grayslake, 47-38 £». "Friday, we -played poorly, we played flat and we didn't play hard," Marian Central Coach Hans Rokus said. "We sat down Saturday before the game and went over a couple of things from the night before. As you can see, we played much better and with more intensity." The 'Canes, who played without Chuck Hartlieb who was off on a college recruiting visit, got balanced scoring from the remainder of the squad. Andy Hartlieb, Curt Wozny and Dan Lalor all scored 11 points in Saturday's win as Marian ran its conference record to 3-3 and its overall mark to 7-4. "We were worried about the way we played Friday night. We made a nice turnaround in 24 hours," Rokus said. Marian used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Grayslake for the win. After trailing for most of the game, Andy Hartlieb tallied nine of his 11 points in the final segment on three baskets and three free throws. The Hurricanes outscored GL, 21-11, in the fourth period to pull away for the win. "We dug down a little deeper ifi the fourth quarter. We needed a little extra," Rokus said. In Friday night's game, the Hurricanes just seemed to come out flat against the Bulldogs. They feljbejjind, 11-6, in the first quarter, and never caught up, as Grant went one to win, 60-48. "We didn't start playing heads up defense until the second half. We weren't taking the ball to the hole. The concentration wasn't there," assistant coach Kevin Dix said. Marian was hurt by un balanced scoring. Only four Hurricanes scored, with Chuck Hartlieb leading the way with 21. Hartlieb kept the Bulldogs from running away with it in the second quarter with 10 points. He also picked up the pace in the fourth when the 'Canes cut their deficit to four. "Chuck had some good steals. He's very talented. He knows to take the ball to the hole and he tejows at the end he has to sfipot," Dix said. The score was 41-31 going into the final period, before the teams each sunk three free throws to make it 44-34. Freund hit for eight points in AAcHenry's loss. . Paul Morenz, Deerfield wins battle of the Warriors By Mike Lamb Most of the crowd that at tended the game in Buckner Gym had already left. He shook fcands with a great majority of them. All Paul Morenz could do now was ponder about the last few hours. "I look back 20 years and its the same people in the bleachers tonight. It's the same people who have always backed the athletic program. I looked into the crowd tonight, and it seemed like I saw at least 50 people who where in the stands my last game here." For Morenz, it was a suc- r cessful homecoming. The for mer McHenry higlrarthletic star led his Deerfield Warriors to a 48-42 win over his alma mater Warriors in front of his hometown neighbors Saturday evening. Morenz attended McHenry High School between 1958-62. • Sure, Morenz was happy with the win over his former high school. But at the same time, he had a lot of respect for McHenry and his neighbor, Ken Ludwig. "Ken Ludwig is a class guy. I hope I'm around for 300 vic tories. That says something for the community. That's a compliment to the school system," said Morenz. While receiving Morenz's respect, Ludwig was still Woking for answers in the McHenry lockerroom. His team is now 5-8 overall, while Deer field went to 10-6. "We had our opportunties," he said. "The game was there for us for the taking, but we couldn't get over the hump. And I'm very perturbed with the officials. They (Deerfield) scored at least three baskets on violations." Ludwig's Warriors only led twice the entire game. Once at 2- 0 and at 18-16. Deerfield would tie the score at 18-18 in the second quarter and take the lead at 20-18. Morenz's Warriors would never lose the lead after that. But the biggest lead Deerfield could build up was nine points. "I wish I had the answers for our offensive doldrums. I'm happy with the defense. It's just the offense. We just have to get more consistent on offense." Morenz marked the two squads as very even. "The difference was we just got the early lead and we could dictate at the end. They had to play defense." One of the reasons McHenry fell behind early was Jim Sandgren. The 6-foor-4 forward had been hurt for most of the season. This was only his second game back from the injury. He scored 12 points in the first half and finished with 17 on the game. "He's a good player," said Ludwig. "A very nice player. Without him it wouldn't he a contest. I thought about going box-on-one, but we didn't practice it all week." McHenry jumped out to the 2-0 lead when Peterson muscled one Continued on page 19 McHenry hammers Chargers By Dick Rabbitt CARPENTERSVILLE - The McHenry Warriors, shooting an amazing 62 percent from the field, defeated Dundee-Crown Friday night 77-65 in a Fox Valley Conference' game. The Win leaves the Warriors in a second place tie with Jacobs (3- 2), two games behind Wood stock. ( Warrior Coach Ken Ludwig was more than pleased with the teams performance on Friday. "Our shot selection was good tonight, and for a change the ball went in the basket," Ludwig said. v The Warriors hit on 34-of-55 shots from the fjgld and nine-of- 11 free throws. McHenry made nine free throws in a row before missing in the last two minutes of play, when the game was out of reach of the Chargers. Maybe credit for the good Tree throw shooting should go to Sophomore coach Bill Blankenhorn. His sophomores hit for 18-of-20 in their win over the young Chargers. With Bill at Ludwig's side during the varsity game, maybe some of the free throw shooting rubbed off on the varsity. "The kids did a good job covering tonight. They did get some easy baskets, but most of the time they had to work for the basket," Ludwig said. Charger coach Jim Hinkel was still in shock. "We ran into a buzzsaw tonight. They shot the lights out of the gym," he said. "When I saw them against Fremd they couldn't buy a basket, but tonight they couldn't miss. "We thought we had Peterson stopped, and when we did during the second period, they scored from down the lane. When we tried to stop their outside shooting, then Peterson got the hoop." Mark Peterson, McHenry's 6- foot-6 center, led all scorers with 22 points hitting on ll-of-15 from the field. Pat Dunne added 18 for the Warriors. The Warriors never trailed in the game as Peterson, Corey Scott, Scott Freund and Dunne doing all the Warrior scoring in the first period. The Warriors led 20-10. In past games, the second period has seemed to be the Warriors downfall, but not Friday night. Peterson's basket gave the Warriors a 22-10 lead, and from that time on in the period, the big fellow was Continued on page 19 Warrior grapplers sweep double dual At a time when the McHenry wrestling team needed it the most, the Warriors found it this weekend. The Warriors regained their confidence. McHenry did lose to Fox Valley Conference foe Crown- Dundee Friday, but the Warriors defeated Kaneland and Joliet Catholic in a double dual Saturday. The loss to the Chargers, was somewhat of a moral victory for Marty Sobc- zak's squad. With a lineup that consisted of two sophomores not varsity regulars and a forfeit at 98 and 112-pounds, the Warriors only trailed Crown-Dundee 17-14 after the 145-pound match. But the Chargers went on to win 34- 17. McHenry defeated Kaneland 34-22 and Joliet Catholic 40-21. The two wins raised McHenry's record to 7-7 overall, but fell 1-3 in the FVC. "Theoretically we could have beaten them (Crown-Dundee) 23-21 if we would have had the upper classmen there," said Sobczak. "The last couple years we folded away after Christmas. This group of kids are different. We're not out of the woods yet. We still can go sour. But these last three matches have set us up for the last four matches. They (his squad) realize con ference is not that far away. We could have a respectable season here." ' Both the Chargers and the Warriors had to forfeit at 98- pounds. McHenry's first win against Crown-Dundee came at 119-pounds. Ric Conner won a 5-4 decision over Jeff Stegler. Conners recorded two more wins on pins on Saturday. He pinned John Stachelski of Joliet in 2:42 and Gene Streid of Kaneland. At 126-pounds, Eric Gaza defeated Tom Cornwall 10-7 and Ray Lance at 138-pounds, tied Craig Niketas 9-9. Roland Hunt, at 145-pounds, pinned Steve Richert at 5:12. It was one of two pins for Hunt on the weekend. He had also pinned Tom Ross of Joliet Catholic in 33 seconds. Sobczak called Hunt the "class wrestler of the week. He looked like a sectional qudftfyer Continued on page 19 SEE The Experts! Shooting a miserable one- out-of 13 from the field in the last quarter, the Skyhawks watched a 33-26 third quarter lead evaporate. Wauconda ran down the clock in the final seconds and took the final shot which missed the mark. The Skyhawks Hvere outscored 10-4 in the final period. * The win raised John- sburg's record to 2-3 in the NWSC and 6-7 overall. Wauconda is also now 2-3 in -the NWSC, while 6-8 overall. "We had a lot of closp shots, but they didn't go in," said Johnsburg coach Ben Beck. "We were real solid on defense down the stretch, which put us in the position to win. "It's nice to get those W's, but were still having problems offensively. Defensively we're playing better. Offensively we can't put four quarters of ball together. Defensively the ^intensity has picked up." Wauconda took a 12-9 first fRuarter lead, but Johnsburg outscored the Bulldogs 10-7 in the second quarter to tie the game at 19-19. The third quarter was also John-, sburg's as the Skyhawks built up a seven point lead. But ' the fourth quarter shooting drought hit and Wauconda closed the gap. Jeff Nichols led John sburg in scoring with 12 points, while Greg Sobiesk scored 10. Sobiesk also led Johnsburg in rebounding with Joe Majercik, each grabbing 11. Jeff Preston had 10 rebounds. Majercik. al^o recorded four assists. HOW 10 SUBSCRIBE TO THE maindealer * The McHenry Ploindealer 3812 W. Elm Street McHenry.
